Without taking side, I would like to share my 2 cents' worth. I always feel that if one is not born an English speaking native and his ultimate goal is to be able to write and speak English like a master, he is in for a long-agonizing journey. I have been at it for 20 years and still painfully working on getting it perfect. I realize that I often made careless errors, such as missing an "s" here and there and misspellong word etc. That, I think is something I have to work on but is tolerable to myself, as long as I know my speech and sentence structure are gramamtically sound and the meaning is getting across. For learners, it's extremely benifitial to possess a good understanding on all aspect of English, but in real life I dare say, many are not in that category, including natives. Frankly, more than a few don't even know and could care less what "past perfect tense" is. I don't mean to antagonize anyone. That's how I see it. That's said, learners must in time learn to develop a balance in learning. By that, I mean learning the fundanentals and applying them gramamtically correct in their writing without suffering from the"unnatural" sound. What I see is, many learners are too focused on the grammatical aspects and neglected on structure and tone, or vise vera. Ultimately, their writing is often compromised. I have been there. Believe me!

I deeply believe that South China Morning Post is worth reading.

Personal changed feelings/opinions/attitude towards English language learning

    I am convinced that English language learning are stressful and frustrating before. I feel nervous when everyone is focus on me and when teacher is listening carefully. I believe this feeling comes from my self- doubt. I think classmates are step ahead of me. I also cannot correctly pronounce some sounds and sets of sound. To be frank, I have thought that English is no more important because I am in Chinese Language and Literature Programme. I no need to improve my English anymore.

However, my friends told me that mastery of the English language is important. Hong Kong being a service - oriented economy, the advantage of having a competent English-speaking work force has become all the more improtant. I know that being a Chinese Language and Literature student is only an excuse to avoid learning English (You shouldn't think like that! Nothing wrong with being a Chinese major.). This thought only badly affects my interest and progress of learning English. I do know that if I lose the interest of learning English, my English cannot improve anymore. I need to find some ways to prevent feeling so embarrassed.

     There are ways for me to prevent feeling so embarrassed. I think the most practical way is to improve English. I should study English continuously. When I find some words that I cannot pronouce, I will check the electronic dictionary immediately. I will also try to speak English with my friends. I believe I can speak English fluently if I often do that. My friends can also kindly point out my grammatical mistakes. They will not laugh at my absurd mistakes. Therefore, I will not feel embarrassed anymore.

Hi,

From the tone in which you wrote, your English basic is fine. I think what you need is more exposure to English. From my personal experience, watching educational programs like Discovery and The History Channels on television can help tremendously. We can use Closed Caption as a guide while the narrator speaks. This method can help you build your sentence structure and word usage. Also you can learn how words are pronounced as you listen to the program content and practice your English orally following the program. I hope this suggestion will work for you!

Become a confident speaker

How to improve your English speaking skills, so that you can communicate more easily and effectively. These tips will help you to become a more confident speaker.

Practice where you can, when you can. Any practice is good - whether you speak to someone who is a native English speaker or not.

It's important to build your confidence. If possible, use simple sentence structure that you know is correct, so that you can concentrate on getting your message across.

Try to experiment with the English you know. Apply words and phrases you know to new situations. Native English speakers are more likely to correct you if you use the wrong word than if you use the wrong grammar. Experimenting with vocabulary is a really good way of getting feedback.

Try to respond to what people say to you. You can often get clues to what people think by looking at their body language. Respond to them in a natural way.

Try not to translate into and from your own language. This takes too much time and will make you more hesitant.

Dear Beverly,

I am not an English expert, (far from it, I too suck at writing and am a terrible speller and it is my first and only language!) but if I were to judge you by your letter and the writing skills demonstrated there....Well I'm sorry to say but you are not writing at a level that one would find in college. On the contrairy, I would judge that you are writing at a 7th grade level. And If I were you, I would use this "critizism" to empower myself to LEARN, LEARN, LEARN! From the errors that you have displayed in your writing, I can tell by reading it that English is not your first language. You are improperly using the (COLON in your writing, and just look at how F---ked up the paragraph that starts with "In the end" is. Not to mention the run on sentences and punction errors and and the use of words as singular verses plural, and the sentence structure itself the arrangement of nouns and verbs and the placement of the subject of the sentence. A good writer is a good writer wether they are writing in their native tounge or in their adopted language, If you learn the rules of the language and follow thoes rules then you will be a good writer. I know many people that speak English as a scond language and can spell and write much better than I! (much to my shame) but sometimes the people that are brutally honest with us are actually doing us a favor and that is telling it like it is! And yes, I agree with your English you suck at writing....NOW DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! LEARN THE RULES!
