Most dictionaries should tell you whether it's transitive or intransitive, but the good online ones surely do.

Why bigger is not acceptable in this sentence? I thought they were synonyms.

Genetics is the study of how the qualities/characteristics/traits/natures/constitutions/features/marks/properties/characters of living things are passed on in thier genes.

The words in bold are all synonyms in my dictionary, but I'm not sure it they all fit here. Please help me delete those that don't work. Thanks.

You should get a subscription to the M-W online dictionary ($30/year), if you're concerned with synonyms. They have quite detailed definitions.
