I'm an independant english tutor and I have a student who suffered a sort of stroke about 15 years ago. At the time the doctors said he'd never speak again, walk again and he'd be lucky to learn to recognise people from his past. He has managed to do all this and more and only appears to be slightly handicapped, but he is handicapped. He wants to learn to speak English and he's very determined. Recently visited Vietnam and fell in love with it. I start a new job in the UK in mid-September and am interested in coming out to Vietnam for 4 or 5 weeks to teach English.

I have no TEFL qualification or teaching experience but am very good with people and am a fun person. I have a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering with Management from the University of Edinburgh, UK and am a native speaker of English.

Hoi An is my favourite place in Vietnam and I would like a teaching position in (or near) Hoi An, Da Nang, etc. and ideally would teach adults or university students.

Can anyone help?

The best advice that I can give is the same that was given to me and which words well. 1. Tell your students "You learn to speak English with you ears, not your eyes." and keep reinforcing it. Teach them to understand that English is not a phonetic language. They should try to see each word as model for a combination of sounds. 2. Do not always write on the board. Encourage them to listen carefully to what you are saying. 3. Get them to speak. I know that there are often cultural barriers hindering this so that you need to lead them into some of the practice games slowly and carefully. Particularly when they are speaking to each other....

Teaching English in Public school in Seoul, Korea

We are located in BC, Canada and certified by Public school board to provide Native English Speaking teachers in Korea. A sort of 'idiot's guide', if you will. I'm looking at the TEFL course and wondering, is that the benchmark, an essential tool to get started. And if so, are there a number of courses to choose from or is there a single, recognised, all-in-one course? Any comments/ shared experiences would be much appreciated. Best regards in advance, Richard.

Re: Teaching English in Cuba

Hi Joanna, Did you ever get any information on teaching English in Cuba? We have all just finished an ESL course and we are professionals in the health area but we have no luck in locating places to teach there. We are just going to try our luck at the university in Havana and exchange English lessons for salsa dancing lessons..if that's possible. I guess we are just going to take the risk and see what happens. I'm sure one can create "the need" rather than plug into something already existing, if you know what I mean.Hope to see other like minded souls over there. In 1993 four of us took a similar chance in Albania and it has resulted in a life long link with that country. Best of luck.....maybe see you over there...

Re: Verbs

Your question is very open-ended so difficult to answer succinctly. Are you using an ESL series of books as the basis for your course? If you are following a particular plan, then I would look at the teacher's manuals and see how it progresses through the lessons in teaching English verb forms. With the progressive tenses, you certainly have to begin with the present tense of the verb "be". If your students' native language has a progressive tense, you are a long way towards success, since you can map the English form to the same form in their language.

Re: I have played it for 5 years, I have been playing this for 5 years, any difference?

You're welcome. Grammar is often perceived as a major obstacle by many English teachers. Not because they feel their English may be poor but because despite being able to speak and write English correctly they don’t know what makes it correct and they cannot explain it to their students. How many times have you been asked questions like: Why can I not say “I have an Italian new girlfriend.” You well know the correct sentence is “I have a new Italian girlfriend” but apart from your instinct you have no other guidance as to why one is correct and the other isn’t, and so the inevitable answer follows: Because that’s not how we say it in English!
