Help for translation of English economic words

Hi everyone!
I am about to translate a sort of "economic" report about Italian regions.
It`s the firs time i come across something like that so I really need your help.
Let`s start then!

Is it correct to write:"Its GDP is estimated around 14.200 euro"?
would you write something like: "he would like to meet delegates of productive world and commercial distribution"?
Would you use to write a formal report in English an expression such as "The Regional Director of Sicily would be pleased/honored to meet the Chief minister of Andrha to discuss about agricultural,mevhanical,navy and furniture industry"..does it sound right??
Do you also have in English the expressione "three economic sectors" to refer to i 3 settori economici ovvero primario, secondario e terziario?
Referring to enviromental issues, would you say:"He would like to compare and discuss experiences related to development and qualification of teh territory such as energy/enviroment, data transmission nets and social and logistical services"?
How do you say in English "attivita` produttive"?
Does it sound right something like: Sicily`s main incomings are represented by mechanical engineering, transportation equipment and telecommunications."? Or: "Its main productive business are breeding and wine".
And what about this:" he would be pleased to meet you in order to plan collbaoration`s agreement to organize exchanges within universities and research sector"? Is within right or between is better?
the idea is to let students move by universities...
Last thing, do you usually use in English to write You with initial capital letter if you ae addressing to someone important?

As you can see, I have a lot of doubts cause I have never attended a business English class before...even if I feel it`s time to take one !
I would extremely appreciate your suggetsions, advice and, basicly, your help!
Mostly, i would like to know whether the language is correct or not.
I mean, I have to write a formal paper but, you know, it doesn`t have to be ridicolous! something like you would expect to read in case you were reading a formal English paper...

As a couple of bits of general advice I'd say

Remember that you must always start a new sentence with a capital letter.

Try to avoid over-lengthy sentences; your first paragraph is one single over-complex sentence.

Make sure that you are using the correct form of a word; especially when using nouns/adjectives.

I've been thinking over this question since I read it. Historically speaking even in the time of Chaucer, they did not put THE before the names of celestial bodies like Mercury, Venus, Mars or Jupiter. I feel it might be a result of translation from Latin documents, although the French influence could be also reckoned as the cause. What is interesting is, however, that Shakespeare and some of his contemporary writers used phrases like "the Venus" or "the Mars". So the rule of no THE for planets other than "the Earth" seems to have somehow swayed in the past history of the English language. But in the current English they seldom say "the Venus". Even in the case "Venus" is modified by an adjective like "bright", they commonly say "bright Venus", not "the bright Venus".

Celestial bodies
Names of other planets and stars are proper nouns and begin with a capital letter: "The planet Mars can be seen tonight in the constellation Gemini, near the star Pollux."
The words sun, earth, and moon are proper nouns when the sentence uses them in an astronomical context, but not elsewhere: so "The Sun is a main sequence star, with a spectral class of G2"; but "It was a lovely day and the sun was warm". Note that these terms are only proper nouns when referring to a specific celestial body (our Sun, Earth and Moon): so "The Moon orbits the Earth"; but "Pluto's moon Charon".

Hi Diddy,

Here is the piece with errors corrected, and a couple of amendments made to make the style better. All in all it looked very good, there are a couple of expressions in which the correct preposition is not obvious, you just have to know these I'm afraid! One point is that King or Queen should always be spelled with a capital letter. There are a few places where the word order or verb tense needed changing, it would be best if you talk about these with your teacher if you don't understand any of the changes I have suggested.

The battle of Bannockburn in 1314 and what happened at Culloden in 1746, are two of the bloodiest battles ever fought between Scotland and England. The first one ended [up is not necessary] with a glorious victory for Robert Bruce and his Scottish partisans, while the second one was a crushing defeat for âBonnie Prince Charlieâ and his claim to the Scottish throne. Robert Bruce was crowned [as is not necessary] King of Scotland in 1306. At this time it was custom[delete,] that the Scottish Kings were crowned in Scone and for 500 years they had sat on âthe stone of sconeâ during the coronation ceremony. The English King Edward I had in the meantime removed the stone during one of his campaigns, and placed it in Westminster Abbey, where it has remained for the last 700 years. The present English Queen was crowned on exactly this old â[delete the] stone of destinyâ.

Bruceâs crowning was dramatic: he murdered his rival, âthe Red Comynâ, in the church in Dumfries and afterwards rode in a hurry to Scone to take over the crown. Comyn was one of the vassals whom King Edward had installed in his attempt to make Scotland English territory and the killing formed part of the Scottish fight for freedom which had started under Sir William Wallace.

Wallace beat the well trained English forces at Stirling Bridge, though the same English forces did for Bruce 17 years later at Bannockburn. The English army was in both cases far bigger than the one the Scots could muster, but even the feared archers, who had been Englandâs trump card in the 100 years war against France, had to yield before Bruceâs spearmen, who fought with desperate courage.

Wallace was unfortunately betrayed by his own men and he did not survive the fight for freedom, but Bruce and James Douglas did. These 2 national heroes continued the resistance stubbornly until only 14 years after Bannockburn, Edward III gave up all claims to Scottish territory and Bruce was recognised as the lawful King of Scotland.

I'm not qualified to respond to all of your interests here, but I will take it as far as my knowledge allows. I hope others more knowledgeable will join in.

Some general observations:

1. Titles of research projects, conferences, and published articles, should include capital letters on all the major words in the title, (such as: âCriminal Problems of the Integration of Foreign Citizens and the Protection of Minorities in the Province of LeÃ³nâ.

2. 'Paris, (France)', etc., should be written 'Paris, France'--no parenthetical marks are needed.

3. I recommend that you add a couple spaces to separate the date in the left margin from the item that follows, such as:

There is a mistake in your and other people's translation of the first sentence - in this sentence the capital letters of personal pronouns make a difference.

1) Erlaubten sie Ihnen, Ihr Auto vor ihrem Haus zu parken?
Did they allow you to park your car in front of their house?

Number 3 goes like this:

3) Der Trainer wollte, dass alle seine Spieler am Konditionstraining teilnehmen.
The trainer wanted that all of his players take part in fitness training.

Hi MrP. Many thanks for your suggestions, some of which were excellent (such as âhelp to dispel the confusionâ). I have some questions about the suggestions and I added other doubts.

Given my purposes, I think it is better to say: âThe analysis of these issues is important because by clearing them up we will gain a better understanding of the nature of the Pyrrhonistâs ethical stance â which in my view has been misinterpreted in several pointsâ, and this, in turn, will allow us to assess its coherence.â
By the way, is it clear that âitsâ refers to âPyrrhonistâs ethical stanceâ?

2) âreveals itself asâ: not quite ok; âseemsâ, âappears to beâ.

3) âFirst, it is not true that all the members of a group such as a family or a community must always obey the same norms, or that they will necessarily share the same abilities.â

You suggested the sentence above. I thought of the following one, because I want to preserve the idea that it is a fact, in order to support the argument Iâm displaying in the part of the article in question:
âFor, first, it is a fact that the members of a group, such as a family or a community, do not always obey the same norms, and that they hardly ever have the same abilitiesâ.

4) Perhaps: âSome peculiar interpretations of this passage have been put forward. It has been claimed that Sextus is here being ironic or flippant, and even that this final chapter of PH is not by Sextus. I cannot find anything in PH iii 280â281 to support such bizarre interpretations.â
Does flippant work? Iâm not sure what the intention of dilettante is!

The point is that one guy says on a page that Sextus is being ironic, and five pages later he adds that Sextus says what he says in the passage in question âpar dilletantismeâ (the guy is French).

5) âThere are three passages which, to a greater or lesser extent, seem to confirm that in the event that ataraxia in matters of belief were abandoned as an end or stopped accompanying suspension, the Skeptics would not consider a vital part of their outlook to be lost.â

Is âto a greater or lesser extentâ correct? Thereâs an expression in Spanish, and Iâm not sure whether the expression above is real English.

6) This is a new thing I added to the paper. And thereâs a translation from the Greek.

âThe second text is AM i 6, where, as was noted before (see n3), there is no mention of the Skepticâs quest for unperturbedness in the story of the Pyrrhonistâs philosophical journey. The passage is the following:
with respect to the studies the Skeptics experienced something almost like what they experienced with respect to the whole of philosophy. For just as they approached the latter with the desire of reaching the truth, but, when confronted with an equipollent conflict and the anomaly of things, they suspended judgment, so too with respect to the studies, when they set out on their acquisition seeking to learn the truth here as well and discovering equal aporias, they did not hide .
I find this omission at the very least suggestive, since if the search for ajtaraxiva were inherent in Pyrrhonism, one would certainly expect Sextus to mention it in the present passage. Perhaps this is due to a change of viewpoint from PH and AD to AM, which is generally considered to be the latest of Sextusâ surviving works. Or perhaps it is only due to the fact that in AM Sextus is concerned neither to give a detailed account of Pyrrhonism, as he is in the first book of PH, nor to expound the Skepticâs attack on ethics, as he is in the last chapters of PH iii and in AD v. Be that as it may, what is undeniable is the fact that in the brief story told at AM i 6 unperturbedness plays no part, whereas we do find here the most distinctive aspects of Pyrrhonism: the search for the truth, the irregularity of things, the conflict among equipollent positions, insoluble aporias, the adoption of suspension of judgment.â

By the way, I think that âaporiaâ exists in English, even if it is commonly used. Am I right?

7) âIf I understand this passage correctly, the difference between the Skeptics and Arcesilaus with respect to the ends they pursue is no reason not to consider him a Skeptic; on the contrary, this difference is referred to while enumerating the reasons why the Skepticsâ and Arcesilausâ attitudes are almost the same. (â¦) In any case, for my present purposes what must be emphasized is again the fact that Arcesilausâ not taking unperturbedness as a part of his end does not seem to constitute in Sextusâ eyes a motive for denying that he adopts the Pyrrhonean attitude. Rather, the only reason for this denial appears to be, as has already been noted, Arcesilausâ assertion that suspension is good and assent bad. But even if we accept that both elements indicate that Arcesilaus is not a Skeptic, we cannot deny that PH i 25 provides strong support for the view that the quest for ataraxia in matters of opinion is not essential to Pyrrhonism, and that AM i 6 at least suggests that this is the case.â

This is almost the complete passage of a text you corrected. I changed some things using what you said. But I added other sentences.

8) Finally, I changed the title to this: âThe Pyrrhonistâs ataraxia and philanthropia: On the Character and Coherence of Sextus Empiricusâ Skepticismâ.

Does this sound ok? (By the way, yes, ataraxia and philanthropia are in Greek). Also, can you remember which type of words go in capital letters in titles in English? (Adjectives, nouns, verbsâ¦?)
