I think it will be better if we ~~can~~ meet tomorrow or the day after ~~tomorrow~~. I believe Jane will also be there because she has some leaves before he her next exam. I ~~will~~ would prefer to meet in the evening , and I believe this will also be your preference ~~because at that time you will have some spare time~~. We can meet at the Station because your home is located nearby. Please let me know if this suits you.

Hi Jackson, I notice that many posters use expressions like "she has some leaves." I'm not sure if this is British, or if it comes from translation. In the US, "leave" used to be common in the military, and we use it for special purpose time off, like "administrative leave" or "pregnancy leave" (I can't think of the right adjective) or "bereavement leave." Otherwise, we usually just say, "time off."

The clause about the spare time seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

You may wish to keep the "can," depending on what conversation has gone before. If this is the first mention of an evening meeting, the "can" would probably be more polite. If the possibility of an evening meeting has already been acknowledged by your correspondent, I think it's better without it.

idiom: be out of sorts

Hi guys,

Can you please help me with how to use this idiom? I learned this phrase during the translation of one episode of Cold Case. It means feel slightly ill or slightly unhappy. But guys, if you look at these two definitions you should agree with me that they're absolutely different. To be frank, I don't know how to use it in the normal life....Just imagine the situation, that someone invited you for the party and you're excusing yourself from that party, for example via email, where you wrote: "Sorry, I can't come to your party. I feel a little out of sorts. ". How that other person will distinguish what your feelings are? I mean, how can he determine whether you feel really slightly ill or just not in the mood to celebrating something...????

many thanks in advance, that idiom seems to be used very widely, so I want to learn it.

I don't think it's necessary to translate "allait partir travailler" literally; "was going to leave to work" would sound too clumsy

Actually I wrote "he was leaving for Ireland for work", is it wrong too?

2) Do you accept
a) "he was going to work in Ireland as soon as
- his exams were [had been = wrong?] over
- he finished / had finished his exams

b) "he was goint to work in Ireland right after
- he finished / had finished his exams
- he would finish / would have finished (?) his exams
- his exams would be / would have been (?) over"

- Is it also possible to use the present, even though it's reported speech, since the period referred to has not happened yet?

a) "he called me to say that he is going to Ireland as soon as
his exams are / have been (?) over OR he finishes / has finished (?) his exams

b) "he called me to say that he is going to Ireland right after
- he finishes / has finished his exams
- his exams will be over

Are hearing and having heard both possible here? What's the nuance betwenn them?

Which tenses should be used here, please?
a) I would quite / really like to work in Ireland as well (possible ?)

5) Is this use of pronoun acceptable ?
"One doesn't want to let everybody know what they want to do" ? Is "they" ambiguous or incoherent here, or is it all right ?

Even though it is not necessary to translate "lui et moi" in English would you say:
"It has been a such a long time since we have known one another, he and I [and not "him/he and me" ?

7) Il n'est pas nÃ©cessaire de mettre tout le monde au courant de ce qu'on a envie de faire. Il y a des tas de gens qui rÃªvent bruyamment d'accomplir de grandes choses et ne sortent jamais de chez eux. Quant Ã son niveau d'anglais, un sÃ©jour de deux mois ne peut que l'amÃ©liorer.

a) Would you translate this passage this way?

"you don't have to / you neednât / there's no need to tell everyone what youâre up to / want to do / feel like doing all the time. Lots of people dream aloud (?) about accomplishing / achieving (?) great things they're going to do and then never give it a try (?) / make it real (?). As for his English, a two-month stay / sojourn (?) in England can but / just (?) improve it.

b) What you meant by the following:

My idea would be as yours, except:

"...to keep everyone posted...have grandiose ideas about accomplishing great things but never leave home...can only improve it."

is that you would not use "to keep everyone posted", "have grandiose ideas..." and "can only improve it" ?

("Harp on about" doesn't seem quite right here; I'm not sure about my "never leave home" â I feel there's a more natural alternative, but can't place it.)

What's the meaning of "to harp on about something" then? How would you use it?

Three questions.

Hi EF guys,

I just finished the translation of the CSI LV season finale. This time it was really hard...:-((

Can you please help me out with these cases?

1) One man wants to congratulate to another:

I just wanted to congratulate you in person.
You sure made a true believer out of me.

Please, does the last sentence mean = Your confidence caused that I really started to believe in it...??

2) Private investigator was recording the meetings with his clients.
He recorded one of his clients saying that he really want to kill someone.

That PI commented this recording as:
That's as close to a confession as you're gonna get.

Can you please paraphrase that sentence for me? I don't know what's the point..

3) CSIs found a victim car at the parking lot. That car was clean as a whistle.
One CSI said to this:

The floor mat's still damp. I think it's just has been detailed.

Please, if something has been detailed..(car, floor,...) does it mean that it was just cleaned??? I have never heard the word "detailed" used in this context...

idiom: Let the chips fall where they may

Hi my englishforums friends,

I just finished translation of one episode of my favourite TV Show to cut my teeth in english and I came across there to very cool idiom "let the chips fall where they may."... I heard that in this sentense:

I'm gonna tell it to the private investigator and let the chips fall where they may.

This said an soldier, who decided to the tell the truth, about how his friend really died. I have paraphrased this sentense as

I'm gonna tell it to the private investigator, I don't care.

Anyway, I'm just curious, I what situations is this idiom being used? Can you describe the situations where is better to use this mentioned idiom and where, vice versa, something easier...like I don't care or and see what happends..I'm sure that there exists a lot of substitutions for this idiom..

butting heads up??

Hi my englishforums friends,

I'm again doing some translation stuff to improve my english and I came across to slang phrase,
which I have no idea what it means..:-(.That phrase is butting heads up against.. I didn't have a problem
with finding of the examples, but they didn't help me...Please in what situation is this slang phrase
being used???

Examples:

- Itâs like butting heads up against a brick wall.

- I think what we're butting heads up against is a philosophical difference in how C++ treats objects and Obj-C treats them...

Smith has a whole translation pattern regarding a style of literature.

Smith's preference of the translation method is A first, (if A not applicable) then B, (if B not applicalbe either) then C.

Then let's focus on a definite aspect of the qualities of method A, B and C. On this regard, we have A > B > C.

I want to know which one expresses the above idea:

corresponds to the decrease of some attribute.

But I don't think you understand exactly what I want to ask here . I just want to make sure whether or not these two sentences are grammatically correct and whether or not they sound natural to native speakers .As regards the meanings , I think it's quite clear . Of course , there is a distinct difference between " we are entitled to take Monday off as a comp day " and " I will have the next day off instead / in lieu / as a comp day ".

What I want to learn here is how a native speaker says in such a situation because most Asian students like us tend to do word-for-word translation which sometimes sounds odd to native speakers .

The main problem here is that I want to know exactly whether or not I can use interchangeably in lieu , instead , as a comp day , as a acompensatory day in the above-mentioned .

Your clarification on this issue is highly appreciated.

You donât need a âspaceâ before a comma. For your question about holidays, there are different ways to express it. In the US, having weekends off is not a given. Many types of work rely on weekends such as restaurants and entertainment businesses. So based on your post, we have to presume you are working in an office or white-collar environment.

If you are normally off on a national holiday and you are asked to work, you will typically get your regular pay plus a âcompâ day which you can take off with pre-approval from you superior.

So we can say:

Christmas this year falls on the weekend; so we are given the following Monday off.

Christmas this year falls on a Sat/ Sun which makes it a 3-day weekend.
