Could someone correct my cover letter?

Hello!

I am a French translator, and I know that my cover letter needs revision, as this is the first time I apply in English and I am not at ease with idiomatic expressions. I would like to apply today, so if you can go over it as soon as possible, I would appreciate very much.

This course is of intense interest to me because I am confident that when I finish my studies I will have the skills, knowledge, and contacts that will enable me to pursue a career in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affaires. To be successful in my chosen profession, I must know all the ins and outs of diplomatic discourse and be fluent in English. Consequently, this course is the best I can ever find.[Are you saying it is the best you have been able to find, the most apposite course you have found, or that it is the one that best fits into your educational plans? I think you need to be more specific.)

I have a passion for studying English and am especially interested in further developing my language skills in areas connected with diplomacy and politics. I must say without false modesty that I am possessed of great ability in studying languages. When I laid down the aim to enter the Moscow State University of International Relations, which is one of the top 5 universities in Russia, in less than two years from a zero level [knowledge] of English I came to the level that allowed me to pass a highly competitive exam with a mark sufficient to gain a scholarship for the whole period of studies. In the university I chose English as a first language (we have to choose at least two) which means that I had 10 academic hours of English a week, including both general English and political translation. Last summer I passed the State Exam in English (the last one before the graduation) with the highest mark possible. And I cannot even say it was extremely difficult as studing English is a great pleasure for me.

Finally, what else am I supposed to be equipped with besides the above mentioned? A good luck perhaps.{I am not sure this is a good idea! - Better to reiterate that you will value the chance of an interesting experience, and are ready to answer any questions they may have.}

My vocational training certificate enabled me to acquire theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and the alternance training - alternance training is not a term I am familiar with. I cannot find 'alternance' in my dictionary, so perhaps this is a mistranslation?

I think you made very few grammatical mistakes. I felt I should change few words because you would sometimes use the same word twice (or the verb and the corresponding noun whithin the same sentence).
Definitely not as good as what you could get from a native but I sure did my best.

How to write a letter of motivation or job cover letter!

How to write a "letter of motivation", you can also write a cover letter for employment. Make sure to include relevant details of job post that you are applying for.

"Letter of motivation" seems to be a literal translation of the French "lettre de motivation". In the English-speaking world, the document is called a cover letter. Remember that it is a letter, so the layout must be correct:
Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing a cover letter.

â¢ A "letter of motivation" or cover letter (CL) is your opportunity to "sell" yourself, i.e. convince the institution or company that they need to have you. Do not be modest: when applying for a job, explain clearly why you think you are suited for the position.

â¢ The goal of a CL is to provide a picture of your background and goals that will persuade the admission committee to accept you.

â¢ Recruiters expect you to show that what you have matches what they want. Remember, this is a question of interpretation, and the secret of writing a good CL lies in using your qualifications and experience to show that you are the best person for the position. (This means, of course, that you need to modify your CL for each position you are applying for. The same goes for your CV, of course.)

â¢ Beyond the particular skills required by each program, a CL should show you to be a clear-headed person, capable of thinking clearly, and a motivated, active learner. Write in a clear and logical manner: remember, the way you write and present yourself says a lot about you.

â¢ Before writing the first draft, take some time to think about yourself, your goals and your skills. Think about your background, what and where you have studied, and how all that makes you suitable for the program/position. Put this in to the first part of the CL.

â¢ Continue in the second section with your professional goals, explaining the connection between them and your studies. Present your long-term plans, and say how the program you are applying for will help you achieve those goals. Make clear why your background makes you suitable for the program, and how the program will help you achieve your long-term goals. In this section also explain why precisely that university etc. is your choice â the courses, faculty, research interests are possible reasons. In conclusion, state how you can contribute to the program.

â¢ You need to take time. Expect to revise your letter up to 10 times (no exaggeration!) before you come up with a good CL. One strategy is, let it rest after you have written a new draft for a few days, and read it again, in order to get a more objective view. And have it checked by as many other people as possible! To do this, of course, means you must start the process early.

â¢ And don't just copy what you have said in the other documents that you submit, but try to add to them. Answer the essay/statement question, if you have one - it usually will be something like "Why are you the right person for this program?".
