Everyone in the class is silence.

Everyone in the class is a good student.

I presume the first of the above two does work. I think you mean doesn't, not does.

But how do you explain away that it doesn't work while the second sentence with a similar pattern does sound right and good.

It's not the same pattern. #1 has an uncountable noun, while #2 does not.

If you replaced uncountable with countable, the #1 sentence would be correct grammar,

eg Everyone in the class is an umbrella.

Howver, as you can see, the meaning would not necessarily make sense.

Best wishes, Clive

Re: (URGENT!!)
The original poster's sentence was this: When provided with low bitrate by the service provider, the quality of the broadcast can be poor.

Your correction was this: A low bitrate from the service provider may cause poor reception.

I presume the poster used the "bitrate" as an uncountable noun and in your response, you put an "a" in front of it, (I think) knowing it is an uncountable noun? If my guess is correct, why did you do it?

caught on a confusion

Hi,

I was looking at my dictionary to look up the word "writing" and it said it is an uncountable noun.

OK, but it has a plural form "writings" right beside the word "writing." I presume the plural word "writings' is an uncountable too like its singular form "writing." Can you help me to understand by giving me some examples of using "writings" as an uncountable noun?

Re: do you always put articles before "grade"?

Thank you. How come my dictionary does not say (literally) it is a abstract conceptual noun which I presume to be a subset of the whole uncountable noun category? It just said it is countable nouns and I thought you need a "the" before a countable word "grade."
