Hi,
My dictionary says this.

Dissertation - A detailed discourse on a subject, especially one submitted in partial fulfillment of the requiremments of a doctorate.

Thesis
1. A proposition to be maintained or proved.
2. A dissertation, especially by a candidate for a degree.

Note that these words can be used outside the academic context of a university.

A job ad (or so I think) was sent through a university listserv to members of the university.

It's a position in a law firm.

I responded to it by calling them, below is the rough recap of the conversation.

"Is this ***, I saw the job ad for the position of a scientific analyst in the firm. I wonder ..."

(I got cut off)

"Oh, we don't do ads. We put the postings through the school"

I am curious if there is ANY difference between "ad" and "the posting" ?

Or is the HR just trying to throw me off ??

1) I think they are the same. University is more specific and formal, college is used in casual speech.
2) I think you'd better check on the Universities' websites. I also think Wikipedia might be your friend.

But I think though dissertation is comprehensive speech but also it starts with research question or hypothesis

My name is *** ***. I am an applicant for the position ofBorder Patrol Agent. I am writing in response to your letter of March 1st, 2008. There is one incident in my teenage history that raisedsuitability concerns, an example of immature misconduct inschool. In 2005, I was,like many 17-year-olds, a very immature person. I takefull responsibility for my lackluster performance during that time, and I hope to prove to you that I have long since matured andbecome an upstanding asset to society.

While attending high school, I made some poor decisionsregarding my choice of friends in my third year, which led to myexpulsion and arrest. As a juvenile, I never realized thatassociating with the wrong crowd could involve me in such apredicament in the future, when I hoped to accomplish an ambition of joining a law enforcement agency such as the UnitedStates Border Patrol. I was unaware of the significantconflict a poorly-considered act of mine could have when I maturedand had to take responsibility for my actions. Although I never formally entered the gang, I did associate with the members of the Sureno gang.

Please allow me the opportunity to address the following incident:

Issue 1:

On February 26, 2005, I was arrested by the Fresno PoliceDepartment, after a disturbance on campus between the Sureno andBulldog Gangs. The incident began when members of the Bulldog gang verbally attacked members of the Sureno gang from outside ofthe campus. The Surenos and I were gathered at a bench in front of the campus, and a security guard took notice of theverbal attacks by the rival gang. Carmen, a security guard atRoosevelt High School, approached and told us to calm down and ignored the verbal attacks. Shesaid that the Fresno Police Department had already been notified thatan outside group of Bulldogs was taunting high school students. After a couple of minutes, more security guardsand police officers arrived. In the group of Surenos was an ex-student who had been expelled from Roosevelt HighSchool and was not supposed to be on or near the campus. When the group noticed this, the ex-student gave me a metalknuckle which I concealed in my left shoe. The ex-student then left the school campus through a back gate. I and two other members of the Sureno Gangfollowed the ex-student to the gate, but as we walked, security guards took notice of our sudden departure andtried to stop us. We sprinted towardthe gate, but as we neared it, a security guardon a golf cart approached and told us to stop. We stopped, but theex-student continued and escaped. Vice Principal Vargas approached us, and questioned andsearched the group, when he discovered the hidden metal knuckle in my shoe.

I do not blame anyone for my immature performance. I understand that I was notobligated to take and conceal the weapon. I took full responsibility and accepted my punishment.

After being arrested and expelled, the juvenile courtgave me a misdemeanor and sentenced me to a year of probation along withprobation school. During my year of probation, I met with myProbation Officer Juan Flores each month, did not associate with gangmembers, and adhered to other conditions.

Probation and probation school changed my life. Not only was I separated from the bad influencesthat had surrounded me, but I was also furnished the opportunity toexcel academically. Probation school transformed myway of thinking. I was not surrounded by students who wished to excel, but by those who were careless of their futures.I saw the disrespect they showed to their teachers, who only wished to help them succeed in life. Irealized that I was not a bad person; I was just heading in the wrongdirection.

After completing my probation and probation school, Ienrolled at Reedley Community College, where Icompleted a two-year Associate of Artsdegree. In 2006, I was on the Deanâs List forachieving a GPA of more that 3.50. Currently I am attending FresnoState University.

With this letter, I enclose all the documents with whichI will try to demonstrate that I have matured and taken positive action to pursuemy dream of joining the United States Border Patrol. The documents enclosed are:

Â· College and university grade transcripts

The above documents illustrate a significant difference between my low academic performance in high school and the improvements that I have since achieved.

More than three years have passed since my arrest. I am currentlyattending Fresno State University, where I plan to obtain my Bachelorof Science degree in Criminology.

Hi,

I thought I knew the difference between less and fewer, but I'm now confused because I thought that "fewer" was the correct word here:

Less than 0.7 hectares / fewer than 0.7 hectares
Less than 2.5 hectares / fewer than 2.5 hectares

I did a search on universities' and governments' websites, because I'm interested in formal written English (it's for an article I'm writing), and here are the results:

"Less than * hectares": 647 results in universities' websites, 473 in governments' websites
"Fewer than * hectares": 28 results in universities' websites, 16 in governments' websites

Less outnumbers fewer by 23 to 1 and 29 to 1 respectively!
Which would you choose? (prescriptive answers are welcome! )

American English speakers are being a bit pedantic and stubborn in this thread. The words are used fairly interchangeably if you are not a bookish American (and if you are only considering the sense of "long essay for a university", which is the only sense the word dissertation has).

Hi Mr Anonymous again !

Perhaps , there is a slight difference between British English and American English and you are using the latter.In USA you don't use this or that expression , but in UK they do use it. So that 's the problem we , Asian students , are facing .Sometimes we don't know whether a sentence written or said by us is correct or not . Someone in this forum says it is odd , but dictionary says ok . Who should we believe ? A world- famous Dictionary like Longman can't be wrong . It is being used by many advanced level university students the world over and the persons who answer in this forum can't be wrong .either because they are native speakers .I think it's best for us , the leaners , to learn both ways , British and American .
