Therefore, I believe that under supervision of professor ****** I can achieve significant results and I can gain scientific maturity. Taking everything into consideration I believe that UNCC is the best place for me to realize my academic plans and goals. (The noun is "economy.")

"Husband" as a noun is the significant other of "wife," as in "man and wife," in most cases.

As a verb, it's similar to "economize," but instead of looking out for yourself, you manage some entity (could be a family, or a business, or a property, or some part thereof) in an economical and prudent way.

  - A.

Re: Do compound adjectives need to be hyphenated when they act as object complements?

dtran1119

I know the rule that we're supposed to hyphenate compound adjectives when they appear before a noun and not after a noun.

For example:

"My parents want me to attend a well-known university."
"The school I attend is well known."

Adverb-adjective compounds, as you have here, are often not hyphenated, even when they precede a noun. For example: "clearly defined rule", not "clearly-defined rule".

I've never really thought about it too much before, but off the top of my head it seems that shorter adverbs, especially those not ending "-ly", are more likely to be hyphenated in combination. For example, I think I would use a hyphen in "often-quoted passage" but I definitely wouldn't in "frequently quoted passage". "Well" is normally hyphenated in compounds peceding the noun, as in your example.

I would always use a hyphen when there is otherwise a risk of ambiguity or misassociation. For example, "fast-talking politician", not "fast talking politician".

dtran1119

Which one is correct?

1) "We should have school year-round."
2) "We should have school year round."

In this case I would definitely use a hyphen. Otherwise there is a real risk of "school year" being read as one unit. However, in "We should leave the building perfectly intact" I would not use a hyphen.

A good rule of thumb in cases of doubt: if the sentence is significantly easier to parse with a hyphen, then use one.

Re: Alternately vs. Alternatively

Cool Breeze

Then I checked Webster's and according to it "alternate" can mean the same as "alternative":

Different people have different opinions on this, so you pays your money and you takes your choice I guess. Here are a few (randomly Googled) definitions that agree with my position:

San Diego State University Style Guide (http://bfa.sdsu.edu/editorial/section2.htm):

"Alternately" means one after the other, in time or space. "Alternatively" means one instead of the other.

"250 Often Confused Words" (http://www.alphadictionary.com/articles/confused_words.html):

Alternately means "taking turns": We paddled alternately so neither of us would get too tired.
Alternatively means "as an option": Instead of going by train, we could have gone alternatively by car.

"Easily Confused or Misused Words" (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0200807.html):

I'm a teacher in a local school in Malaysia. I teach english subject. my first degree was social science and diploma was tesl. english taught in my country is communicative. teaching english in a rural school is a great challenge.at the moment, i am considering to pursue my studies to a master's level. in fact i am waiting for a reply from a local university about my application. i chose to do tesl. the thing is i need to write a thesis and the topic i could think of at this point is 'using newspaper is an approach in teaching writing. in my opinion, a person can learn to write proper sentences by observing sentences constructed in an article. people can learn on how a good sentence is built around a newly-learnt verb. furthermore, newspapers contain various columns ranging from general news to sports from which students are able to read and learn how to write essays of different genre. Do you think that this topic has somewhat been written too often? could anyone give me advice on what topic i should write for my thesis or should i keep on with this topic?

thanks.

Re: grammar questions

Hi,

(1) Professor Beverly Keever of the School of Communications at the University of Hawaii told us there is an inverse relationship to what is considered news and what is important.

Should "that" be inserted before "there is an..." Please advise It's optional. Instead of 'to what', I'd say 'between'.

(2) Speaking opportunity range from public forums organized by politicians to TV programs to elementary school presentations.

Should it be ranges or range? A singular subject needs a singular verb. However, the sentence really needs to say

I had never heard the expression "ergative," which she defined as verbs having both a transitive and an intransitive use. Her understanding was that to use these verbs in the passive is incorrect.

This seemed plausible on the face of it, but a controversy erupted and I was persuaded to take the other side. In Googling this, I found that "ergative" was usually coupled with "the middle voice option," I broke the window (active) The window was broken [by me] (passive) & The window broke (middle).

I brought this up in the thread, as it seemed to shed light on her problem in a couple of ways. She replied that indeed, this was what her superior had mentioned. I tried to coax some of our members to comment, but no one would bite.

I noticed that the majority of the Google references were from Asian sources (universities and professors) eg. Univ. of Hong Kong.

I've never found the ESL community to be shy about embracing non-traditional approaches to things. On the contrary, they seem to invent them.

Could someone comment on this? Do we mean to disparage "the middle voice option"? Does the "ergative verb" concept have a life of its own apart from the "middle voice" discussion?

Thanks for your consideration. - A.
