But these words are slowly being taken away. Many people feel they are not politically correct, and the others may be offended by them. For example, some words that name professions end in 'man" or "ess."

Hi,

For a start, does "the others" sound right? Is it better to say "others" instead in the above?

Second, does "that name professions" in the above sound good? If not, how would you word it? Thanks.

When I read your responses, I realize that these errors occur very often in my own writing/speaking.

For example, confusion of "he" and "she": it often happens in speaking, because in Chinese "he" and "she" has the same pronounciation.

Incorrect choice of words may be a result of the way that Chinese students build their English vocabulary - by studying words with bad dictionaries designed for test preparation (like for GRE). You may often hear a Chinese student complain that he/she has never met the words he/she studied during the preparation for GRE (or some other tests) again.

BTW, Goodman, I can't quite understand the item "space" listed in your post - can you elaborate a little bit?

Thanks!

Re: corrections

Mkafil wrote:

peace

violative means offensive. this word does exist in english vocabulary. i always make fun out of my cousins, so im trying to make some silly words to wish them int heir birthday.. hope u can understand---just confirm me whether the sentence i typed in my earlier post is correct?

It's fine. [Violative is a new word for me, too, but it exists. I think it's interesting that native speakers can learn so many new things on this site.]
