Re: pronunciation
Yes, they are correct in British English. US stress doesn't always follow British stress, but I would have thought so here. By the way the "standard" way to show stress is an acute accent over the vowel: Pórtugal, América, Gérmany, etcétera.

Re: fair-haired
Heh, I know in the UK there are lots of interesting accents. Some people drop this, skip that, shift vowels here, put glottal stops there... Different accent in different places, different social groups, different age groups... It's so in the US too, and in other countries too, I guess....

Re: fair-haired
Yes, there are regional variations in American English. Do you know which accent is chosen by MW as the reference in the pronunciation keys. Is it General American? My problem is that, as I have mentioned before, they are indeed denoted differently in British English. The first one is a simple...

Re: How's and House - are they pronounced differently?
Hi, those two vowels are the same to me. The only difference between "how's" and "house" is the final consonant. I think this is true for both General American and the kind of British English that is usually learned. I don't know if there are people who make a distinction or situations where a...

Re: Unreleased final consonants
Well, maybe it's a little different, because there are several kinds of "o" in British English, I think, and there are several kinds of "o" in Italian too. It depends on the accent... Some vowels (produced by speakers form a different region) sound funny to some speakers in Italy too. However,...

Unreleased final consonants
Hi,I read Nona's new post earlier, but... where is it now? I can't see it anymore. It was a post with a link to a website where you could listen to IPA sounds (for British English).Well, I heard a lot of words pronounced with a clear consonant sound at the end. I thought of posting this:What are...

Re: What makes English so difficult to learn?
and an ignorant American would look at British and pronounce practise (Br. spelling) like practize.... Highly unlikely.Americans on the other hand, have been butchering it for centuries and should not be consulted when learning this language. It is, after all, English and not American.Rubbish. ...
