In China, our tradition is bridegrooms or their parents pay everything because a marriage to a woman means kind of devoting the rest her life to assitant her husband and bridegrooms or their parents even should pay back some money as a gift to the brides' parents before wedding. There is also a saying in China, if a man does not have a appropriate amount of money, he should not expect marriage. Of course, these are just a kind of tradition, some people follow and others do not.

Same-sex marriage is still rare in China. It is NOT illegal in China, yet most people in China regard it as abnormal.

Clive

Hi,

The tradition is that the bride's parents pay for everything.

However, I'd say this is changing. One reason is that weddings are becoming extremely expensive. Another is that peopl are getting married iolder, and thus often have established and well-paying careers with money in the bank.

At least in Canada's multi-cultural setting, newer ethnic groups may have other traditions that they follow.

In Canada, we also have legalized same-sex marriages. For these, I have no idea who pays.

Best wishes, Clive

Re: Proper way to apply annual leave

Hi,

Here's the basic system in Canada. The time off that you are entitled to each year is commonly called 'vacation time'. The term 'vacation' does not necessarily suggest travelling, but rather leisure. You might just stay home and watch TV for two weeks.

Your boss is not entitled to know what your plans are for your vacation, and does not really care. You are entitled to the time, no matter what your plans are. However, you do have to consult with your boss as regards when you can take the time during the year.

If you want to go to a wedding, or visist your sick uncle, you typically do this by using a few days from your vacation allowance.

As we have discussed earlier, different countries apparently have different systems, so people should write letters based on the system in use in their particular country.

Best wishes, Clive

Re: maning of 'top table' as in: member of the 'top table' on climate change

The reference is most common with regard to a wedding or a company dinner.
<strike>My name is *********, I am twenty years

I am writing to you with regard to your <strike>apply for the </strike>Bachelors
programme in Eventmanagement at your university. <strike>I grew up in a big family,
thereby I took advantage of the opportunity to provide myself insight into
different branches. I learned how to associate with customers when I was
working as a waiter and bartender in a local restaurant called “*****************” and in the parental gastronomy.</strike>

<strike>During School holidays and weekends I worked
at the decoration company “*******”
where I developed my organisational and creative skills as we decorated
shopping malls, wedding premises and the ***** Airport.</strike>

<strike>In recent years, I have been aware that I constantly enjoy and feel
comfortable interacting and socializing with different types of individuals and
situations.</strike>

<strike>In turn, this is why I would choose a profession which allows me to
utilize these social and organizational skills with others and also challenges my creative veign.</strike>

I have had various work experience within several environments, which has improved my organisational and communication skills as well as my ability to work under pressure.

In 2005 I graduated with a degree in Computer Science from “*************”
located in ******, during this period I completed an Internship at “*******”
GmbH, where I was able to experience the power of teamwork. I also experienced
and built the necessary skills to cope with and handle the pressure and demands
involved in a multi-functional job environment.

I completed my alternative-service in the ************************************. At this job I gained more experience in Time Management
skills as I was simultaneously working on many projects with extraneous applications.

I choose my Internships cautiously to be able to fall back on a broad range of
knowledge, experience and professions.

I choose to attend the International University of Applied Sciences ********************* to further my education and would also hope that through my
experiences and insight I would positevly contribute to the school and its
student body.

Yours Sincerely *******

Re: Resposta: Re: silly vs foolish

I do not think so. The first married question is much more rude than silly in most cases; I have no idea about the second.

In fact, foolish is much more understandable than silly. If someone did wrong with easy-to-be-done things, then it can be regard as foolish.

If you ask a university student seriously what is 4 plus 5, then it is a silly question.

Or the following question could be regarded as silly:

"Mr. Smith, what is your surname?"

Hi,

There's a move in the US to make English the official language by law. I believe that a fundamentalist US politician remarked, in regard to this, that if English was good enough for Jesus, it was good enough for him.

Clive, is it too much to hope for that you made that up to tease the Americans? That's just horrifying.

Although, I was at a wedding once, and the reading was from this bit when it talks about how Adam got to name all the animals, and how they are still known by that name today. Perhaps mutting in a stage whisper "Just what was he thinking when he got to "duck-billed playtpus, I wonder!" was not the behavior expected in church.

Need a quick advice please

Is that correct?

On the occasion of your golden wedding we would like to take the opportunity to convey our heartiest congratulations to you.
We wish you a very nice day and a long and happy life together.

Best regards

......

Can I formulate congratulations like this or is there a better way to do it....

Thx in advance
