Hi Mad, With this scant context, it could be taken either way. It's pretty confusing.

"Friends" is plural. Was she paired with one particular guy?

Whom is she talking to? Her date??

"Felt" is past tense, but "is" is present tense. Is she still on the date with this guy (or guys) (or girls) when she makes this statement? (like maybe at the very end of it?)

Is Neil her main squeeze? (Sorry, my eyes are getting bad.) Is Nell her main squeeze? Who the h--- is Nell? (Is Lana a guy?)

Anyway, I'm assuming "tonight" is a noun rather than an adverb. "I had to explain about tonight." Not, "Tonight, I felt like I had to explain to Nell."

It's still "tonight" when she makes the statement. It sounds like Nell is not present. If she has already explained to Nell, she must have covered a lot of ground.

But on the other hand, we don't know what it is she wants to explain. Did she feel she had to explain what happened tonight, or did she feel (in the past) that she had to explain that she was planning to go on a date without him/her??

If she's talking to the guy and they're still on the date, maybe it's, "I felt like I had to explain to Nell, but, you know what? I don't feel that way any longer." Maybe she's just telling him that she feels wierd about having felt obligated to tell Nell all her private business.

Or maybe she's warning "him" that this "date" is no secret from Nell, because she felt obligated to tell her/him.

You're asking me, "Did Lana explain to Nell about tonight?" I'll tell you. I don't know.

I guess it depends on the community. My auto insurance expires on June 1 at 12:01 am. If I speak to someone on the phone, they'll tell me it expires at midnight, or one minute past midnight, or "twelve-oh-one-a-m," depending on whom I'm speaking to. They usually like to add the one minute to avoid confusion about the actual date. If I say midnight on June first, is it the beginning of June first or the end of June first??

For years I thought I was covered for the full day on the date of expiration. I was shocked! - shocked! - to find I was only covered for one minute. So I guess it takes a certain amount of intelligence to interpret these things. (i.e. no matter what you do, it ain't gonna be foolproof.)

I must have been thinking in terms of the date on which a bill must be paid. In some cases you have until the end of the last minute on the day it's due. I guess in the system you're describing, 24:00 = 00:00. So you would say 6-May, 24:00 = 7-May, 00:00. What's the convention among programmers?? Do computer clocks actually go to 24:00 ??

Hello!

Well.. I know that most of the people who writes here asking for help says that it's seuch an emergency... but in my case, I can assure you that I really need your help! I'm applying for a job in USA and I need to send a recommendation letter untill Wednesday (today is monday! I have only 2 days)

Please, I BEG you guys, If anyone can correct the letter above, I'd be really greatfull!! (I don't know if this is the correct word)

For whom It may concern: The student Iris (last name) , came to work with us first time in 2005, at the 6Âº Brazil Fest in Folk that took place on August, in (name of my city).The festival is an event organized by Abrasoffa, supported by Unesco, where groups of dancing and folk music from many countries participate. The volunteers are housed with the participants in an accommodation during the whole festival, giving all the support, working full time from 6h00 to 24h00.

She worked as a volunteer during the 2 weeks of event, supporting the organization and the nacional and internacional participants groups. She demonstrated extremely responsibility with every duty, sheâs really hard working and flexible, she had a great relationship with everybody, with respect and profissionalism and she was always ready to help in whatever and whenever it was needed. (I don't know how to write this in a better way... I think I'm saying too much "she")

Due to her dedication and for showing good results at her job, we invited her to work again with us at the 7Âº edition of the Brazil Fest in Folk, and we had the same satisfaction in counting with her.

Doubtless I recommend her to participate at the program Work Experience USA and I can assure you that she is a great candidate, as she showed us that she can deal very well with people from different cultures, speaking a foreign language, sheâs flexible because she could fit (get used?? I don't know ehich word use here) easiliy to de work time and the accommodation, always respecting every person and dealing everything with much professionalism and dedication. This seems odd. Who is charging whom? If you are supplying candidates for jobs, then it is for you to set the charges. If the person to whom you are writing is supplying candidates, then the letter does not make sense.

I hope that Barack Obama will be the next president. He's the only presidential candidate that has run for office in my lifetime whom I genuinely admire, although I am a bit of a cynic when it comes to modern politicians. It may seem a rather shallow reason for voting for him, but I love his story and the idealism that his ascendency to the presidency would affirm. I truly believe him to be a man of integrity and think his example (were he to win) would lead many American politicians to reflect on their methods and messages. I wouldn't expect a lot of practical day-to-day changes, but think that his success could inspire a lot of reluctant but well-meaning people to reconsider running for elected office knowing that it is possible to win without selling your soul.

Also, I just really don't want either of the other two candidates to become president. I do admire John McCain a lot for being a maverick. He too seems to be a man of principle, but he's also a hot-head and many of his foreign policy positions scare me. As for Hillary... well, I just don't like her. While her political positions are very similar to Obama's, she represents almost the exact opposite of everything he does. She's deceitful, manipulative, hypocritical, and (at least in elections) rather machiavellian. She'll do anything to get elected, and has hurt the image of the Democratic Party with her tactics against Obama. In end though, I not only hope but expect that Barack Obama will be the next president. Despite the wrangling I expect to see from the Clinton camp every step of the way, Obama is almost surely going to be the Democratic nominee, and it would take a miracle for the Republicans to win the election this year.

Good for whom? The good and the bad are relative conceptions. What is good for a lion is bad for an antelope.

Resignation of political engagement? I didn't say I refuse to participate in political life of the country. If a strong competition of candidates had been supposed to happen, surely I would have gone to give my vote to someone I prefer. But now I really think it could be a waste of time.

This morning I heard in the news that some foreign mass media wrote Russians had been forced to vote, as it was in the USSR. I don't know whether people were forced to do something in the USSR (I was too little yet to remember anything like that), but what I know now - no one stood close to our doors with a rifle 'forcing' us to vote. It was a choice of every citizen whether to go or not. (It's quite amusing sometimes to know how foreign mass media interpret information.)
