LETTER OF MOTIVATION

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to state my motivation with regards to my choice of applying for the European Legal Studies Programme at the *** with a specialization in European Law and Economic Analysis (ELEA).

First of all since an early age I have always been attracted by the study of Law, especially European Law, and Economic Analysis of Law. In fact it is not coincidence that I received my degree in law with a dissertation on the Economic Analysis of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (both my degree and my dissertation were awarded the maximum grades possible). My interest in European law already dates from when, as a schoolboy, I decided to join the European Federalist Association. In this capacity I used to organize conferences in my native town to explain the constitutional nature of the European Communities. Growing up I was going indeed to discover the legal intricacies of the acquis communautaure. On the other hand, although I already had a penchant for Economics, my enthusiasm for Economic Analysis of Law was to be awoken by a conference in which I met Professor ***, the founder of the New Haven school and one of the leading authorities of EAL, with whom I later corresponded. Later on I studied EAL with Professor *** of University of Catania, an Oxford-trained economist, who was to become my friend and promoter, and with Professor *** of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. I also think it is noteworthy that during most of the University years I was also working as a free-lance journalist dealing mostly with Foreign Policy and European Affairs.

European Law has always been very meaningful to me for two main reasons. In primis I cannot deny that I have always been attracted by it because of my ideological convictions as an European Federalist. In secundis from a scientific perspective I believe it is the most interesting field of Law since it constitutes the emerging of a new super-national legal order that is shaping a new historical era, where the old nation-States tend to fade a bit (since I am also a lover of History I usually compare this phenomenon to the Medieval ius commune, a comparison that my old Professor of History of Law would very much appreciate). Finally I think there is so much more to study in this field, especially since it is in continuous evolution and since the actual EU cannot simply stand still. In fact with the adoption of the Euro the choice seems to have been made by many MS. EU can only grow, especially in the field of the government of the economy and, subsequently, foreign policy, or can shrink back in the remotest possibility to the minimal size from which we started.

Economic Analysis of Law has been like an intellectual awakening to me. In fact it is the instrument and the methodology that I have always wanted to use in my legal analysis. With EAL one has a meter of comparison, which is neither moral nor subjective, but at the same time that always take in account different circumstances and to give them the best possible law. To me it has become not only a methodology of study, but the philosophy of my life.

After the successful completion of my degree I started my legal internship in Italy and subsequently went on to accept a job in one of the most prestigious *** Law Firm in the field of European Law. In my new capacity I soon found possible to apply what I had previously studied. Moreover the daily contact with the top European Institutions, the multi-ethnic nature of my new working environment, the participation to the “European process” and so on, made me very enthusiastic about my new job, even if very demanding. Nonetheless I have the time to write some scientific article: one of my article on European Law is at this very moment being published by a major European editor and I am actually writing another article on EAL and the Treaty of Lisbon.

I decided to apply to the *** since this would enormously widen my study and professional opportunity. In the future I would like to continue working in the field of European Law, possibly in a European Institutions and, at the same time, I would like to pursue intellectual ambitions such a research for Think-tanks and the likes and publishing books and articles on European issues. It is in fact true to say that there is no other such program of European Law from which I could benefit so much than the one from the ***. There I hope to find the intellectual challenges of a top European *** and the European spirit that I need.

In addition to my educational and professional background, I have a strong personal motivation to study at the ***. While I am originally from the ***, I have travelled extensively within Europe and abroad. I have partaken in the Erasmus project during my third year at University, which brought me to Belgium and I have travelled to France, Luxemburg, United Kingdom and Germany on several occasions on professional visits. Consequently, I have developed strong intercultural skills and acquired a knowledge of English, French and Dutch. These factors further increase my motivation to work in an environment which requires understanding of different socio-economic systems.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

thank you for your reply and the correction of my letter of motivation!
I have tried to write clear but I am not certain if it works. I have
got my doubts about it... So I may ask you for another review to make
sure whats behind all this. (or forgotten)

It would be very nice if you can overview it oncemore! thanks a lot! I am so glad you have written me!

Dear Sir or
Madam, ( Is -
most distinguished Ladys and Gentlemen or To Whom it May Concern...
- better?)

I am writing to apply
as an exchange student for the Sculpture Program at the National Academy of
Arts for the winter semester 2007/08. I am an Austrian student attending my
fourth semester of fine Arts majoring in “Sculpture – Transmedial Space” studies
at the University of Arts and industrial Design in Linz, Austria.

I am
convinced that the experience of studying abroad will be very helpful for me to
further develop myself and to improve my knowledge. It has been my
ambition to study at the National Academy
for Arts in Sophia since I first saw your website four months ago. The
university program in Sofia seems to be structured
differently from my university's, and that
is one reason for my decision and my interest in applying to your
academy. For example, we do not have the opportunity to work with
materials like stone or bronze, nor are our studies are based on the study of
nature [this clause reads a little strangely -
what do you mean here? Life drawing?](I do not
know how do describe it in English – I do not mean Life drawing- I mean we do
not have nature as example, ideal or
model for our works- we are not working in the tradition of naturalism – I do
not find the word I am searching for and it is not in my dictionary –is it
imaginable to explain what I mean?). The
stone sculptures from my portfolio are up to five years old. They are results
of a six day workshop which is run once a
year in a Roman sandstone pit in St. Margarethen im Burgenland, Austria. From
the very first time I worked with stone I have been fascinated by this
material. The possibility of learning more in this
area is another important reason for
my application. Our education in Sculpture - Transmedial Space programme
focuses on experimental work in relation to space and situation-specific work.
Through this education I want to develop my eye for fine variances [wrong word? Not sure what you mean here] ( another word for minor differences) in my
surroundings which [consider the social life to find a differential few and to
learn to develop own projects] - Sorry, I
can't work out what you mean here. Is there another way to say it?(minor differences pertaining the social life by means to
find a differential view onto situations- to learn to develop own projects
of(from) this situation. Is it possible to say it in this way: Through this
education I want to develop my eye for
fine variances in my surroundings to find a differential view onto situations
of the social life, to seek after new ideas to realize own projects.? ) This is also a reason for me to search for an
opportunity to study sculpture in a traditional form. I want to experience
another kind of sculpture studies to broaden my outlook and explore how
traditional and modern forms of sculpture can complement one another.

I was
struck (fascinating
-I always thought struck has got a negative association) by the
description of the sculpture program at your university: based on
traditional foundations, but open to new ideas. I think this also reflects
Bulgaria as a country, in the political decision to become a member of the
European Union. I am fascinated by the changes the
country has made and I think it is open to new ideas. To me, it seems
there is a great forward movement to develop new aims [wrong word?] (should
I write objectives?) and that makes [it] [what do you
mean - Bulgaria, or being in Bulgaria at this time of change?] (both but for me it is more important to be there at the
time of change) attractive.
My ideas are very different, as are my projects. I often change my materials to
find the right one for each idea. This multi-dimensional approach
is also shown by my portfolio which I have put
together to provide an insight into my creative process. I would
be thrilled if you gave me the opportunity to learn from the
skills of your Professors as well as the chance for an
[interchange] [wrong word] (exchange of ideas?) with Bulgarian people.

(I am impressed by the descriptions
of your program, and as I am particularly interested in fine arts,
I found the following highly interesting: [it
doesn't seem quite right to be quoting their own prospectus back at
them - is this sentence necessary?]&nbspI would like to take these
courses sculpture, composition,
drawing, history of art, working in material, aspects of modern sculpture,
photography, aesthetics and foreign languages”
because they will enrich my knowledge and help me apply it at a higher standard. It would
be a great pleasure for me to study in Bulgaria, not
least because of the course variety. I am eager to learn about such
a distant culture and make the most of the time I will spend there.

I hope you
will consider my application and can regard me as a well motivated
candidate to this program.

Re: Can you help me correct my letter of motivation for an LLM ?

Anonymous wrote:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I wish to apply for Master of Advanced Studies in Public International Law, specialising in International Criminal Law at Leiden University, starting September 2007.

Although my interest in public international law -- and more precisely in international criminal law -- is rather recent, it constitutes the outcome of a progressive maturation process that started when I was a teenager.

When I was fifteen, I experienced some medical problems that, although now resolved, continued for a few years. This tough period made me question <STRIKE>the sense of </STRIKE>my life: at an age where you are <STRIKE>virtually </STRIKE>expected to have fun, what are you supposed to do when your illness makes you<STRIKE> are </STRIKE>too depressed to even go out? These thoughts finally lead me to a deep conviction: to be happy, I needed to feel useful, to help beings around me in a way or another.

I quickly passed my “maturité” (high school diploma), after studying alone [alone? really? not with tutors or anything else? this implies you had no teachers, etc.] at home due to my medical issues. Obtaining this diploma by myself, in one year instead of two if I had stayed at school, made me feel confident again in my academic ability and strengthened my determination. At the same time, my pressing need to be useful took the form of a deep commitment to animal welfare, a cause that I had until then been supporting passively, being a vegetarian since childhood. I joined several associations, informed myself assiduously about the theories of various philosophers such as Peter Singer, participated in the organisation of conferences and took part in demonstrations. It was always a very satisfying achievement<STRIKE>s</STRIKE> <STRIKE>of my life was actually to</STRIKE> when I was able to convince a friends or relative to give up eating meat as well.

Regarding my studies, my first year at medical school made me realize that I needed a broader view on the world, which is why I started my studies in international relations in my home city, Geneva, whose cosmopolitan air probably also played a role in my choice. This very enriching interdisciplinary cursus? what word are you looking for here? allowed me to develop a deep interest in international law, whose rigour and evolving dimension rapidly appealed to me. These studies also made me more open-minded and aware of the injustices in the world<STRIKE> I live in</STRIKE>, and provided me with a better understanding of the dynamics between and within states<STRIKE> and inside them</STRIKE>. In my opinion, international law is a fundamental element in improving living conditions, especially as it is currently in a phase of considerable evolution.

A conference given by Luis Moreno Ocampo at university during my third year <STRIKE>of study </STRIKE>represented what I dare to call a “revelation”. There is nothing grammatically wrong with this but it sounds over-inflated. You can say "led to a personal revelation or a personal epiphany. International criminal law, although a very young discipline, seems to me full of promises for the future: an international justice for the worst crimes applied on individuals is a necessary complement to the domestic jurisdictions and to the sanction mechanisms of the UN, whose effectiveness is often seriously curbed by the power of the veto of the permanent members of the Security Council. I think international criminal institutions can become very useful tools for fighting impunity. Be careful with your political opinions. The person reading this may be a great fan of the United Nations.

This decisive choice for international criminal law was strengthened by a stay in Cambodia in last summer, when I became aware that many of the difficulties that this country faces today are due to the impunity of former Khmers Rouges, who were never tried and a large number of whom still occupy posts is the current government. Several persons met there actually told me that it would be very difficult to reach a true peace and to restore people’s confidence in their leaders as long as justice is not administered.

An LLM in international criminal law at the University of Leiden <STRIKE>quickly </STRIKE>appears to be an ideal way to deepen my knowledge in this field, particularly because of centuries-long tradition of legal scholarship of the Netherlands, the quality of your university and program, and the presence of several major international law institutions close to Leiden, in the Hague. After obtaining my LLM, I intend to enroll in internships <STRIKE>so as </STRIKE>to better learn about the possibilities that await me, and also to develop practical skills. This tough period made me question the sense of my life: at an age where you are virtually expected to have fun, what are you supposed to do when you are too depressed to even go out? These thoughts finally lead me to a deep conviction: to be happy, I needed to feel useful, to help beings around me in a way or another.

I quickly passed my “maturité” (high school diploma), after studying alone at home due to my psychological troubles mentioned earlier. Obtaining this diploma by myself, in one year instead of two if I had stayed at school, made me feel confident again in my study ability and strengthened my determination. One of the most satisfying achievements of my life was actually to convince friends and relative to give up eating meat as well.

Regarding my studies, a first year at medical school made me realize that I needed a broader view on the world, which is why I started my studies in international relations in my home city, Geneva, whose cosmopolitan air probably also played a role in my choice. This very enriching interdisciplinary cursus allowed me to develop a deep interest in international law, whose rigour and evolving dimension rapidly appealed to me. These studies also made me more open-minded and aware of the injustices of the world I live in, and provided me with a better understanding of the dynamics between states and inside them. In my opinion, international law is a fundamental element in improving life conditions, especially as it is currently in a phase of considerable evolution.

A conference given by Luis Moreno Ocampo at university during my third year of study represented what I dare to call a “revelation”.
This decisive choice for international criminal law was strengthened by a stay in Cambodia in last summer, during which I became aware that many difficulties that this country faces today are due to the impunity of former Khmers Rouges, never tried, a large number of whom still occupy posts is the current government. Several persons met there actually told me that it would be very difficult to reach a true peace and to restore people’s confidence in their leaders as long as justice is not administered.

An LLM in international criminal law at the University of Leiden quickly appeared to be an ideal way to deepen my knowledge in this field, especially because of centuries-long tradition of legal scholarship of the Netherlands, the quality of your university and program, as well as the presence of several major international law institutions close to Leiden, in the Hague. After obtaining my LLM, I intend to enrol in internships so as to better work out the possibilities that await me, and also to develop practical skills. I plan to apply for an internship at the International Criminal Court, in the office of the Prosecutor.

Please find enclosed the other documents required for my application. I remain at your disposal for any further information and look forward to your positive response.

Sincerely yours,

letter of motivation, help and suggestions wanted

Hi!
I'm applying for a volunteer work in few of the EVS projects (I don't know is it familiar to you - it's a kind of an exchange of students in purpose of learning a language and working on yourself by doing a job like an engagement in youth rights, or preparing a film festival or doing some cultural work, etc. - it's domaine of works is pretty various, but al of them require working with people) and I have to write a cover letter, but it has to be pretty general because I have to write only one letter wich will be used in all my applys. Also, people reading this kind of letter pretty much are students, young people, so I figured it would be better not to write so formal as usally. Or I'm I wrong?
I'd be very grateful if you'd give me any suggestions how to improve my letter writen below this text and if you could point out my gramatical mistakes, I'm sure there are a lot of them.
Thanks a lot, lots of kisses from Croatia!

Salut!

My name is ---, I'm a 22 years old student at 3rd year of
french and philosophy at ---. When finding out of this kind of volunteering I
immediately knew I want to be a part of it. With this letter I would like to
apply for the participation as a volunteer in your EVS project and through it I'd
like to bring you closer how deeply I would like to become a part of your team
and why I think you'd make a great decision choosing me.
You're probably asking yourself why I'm so sure of myself
and what is that what I can offer more than someone else? Well...

As I already mentioned, being a student of french language
and it's literature and also being an admirer of it's country's great history
and rich culture, I'm really eager to develop my language skills and to improve
my speaking french whilst gaining valuable experience and knowledge. As well,
I'd like to learn about other cultures and various people.

I started to learn french not before my first year of
college so this kind of opportunity would mean a great deal for my professional
as well for my personal improvement. I'm an highly motivated, hard-working,
tolerante and dynamic individual with expressed comunicating and organisation
skills. During my time as a student I gathered a big amount of experinece in
working with people in wide range of jobs (being a promotor, hostese,
waitresse) that I did as a member of the Student Service in my city. I also
volunteered at animal shelter for two years (Noina arka) and I have participated
in our Society of francophone students in Croatia for two years now. In year 2005. I went through a training curse
to be an animator at seaside resorts.

Like you see, I have kept myself busy.

Well, doing all that I learned I enjoy working with people
and that it fullfills me. And I'm really good at it. I easily adopt in any work
enviroment and in working as a part of a group. Although neither an individual
work that requires an initiative and responsable person with a sens of personal
organisation doesn't represent any problem to me; I act equally good in both
surroundings and I cope effectively with all kinds of demands put in front of
me.

I'm a computer literate and I speak, read and use both
english and french. But I also think that there's a lot more work in front of
me to achieve a level of a perfectly spoken french. Passively I use slovenian
and I also learned deaf-mute language for a year.

Privatly, I like sports and dancing. Depending of my free
time and my mood I ride my bike, I swimm, I run. But for the past year I put
myself mostly in ballet dancing lessons which I really enjoy. Also I adore to
read. Everything. Wether(?) it's a daily or weekly press, all sorts of
magazines, romans, Internet sites – from yellow pages to scientific articles,
arts to love themes – I swallow it all in one breath. Any gatherings or
activities of all kinds including people spending time together always will
drow my attention. I'm a big filmophile
and I enjoy music. And if you add a good cup of coffee with a fresh croissant
accompanying it, plus my family and friends, with whom I share all my interests
and free time, that's my winning choice.

I'm sure you have already got an idea of how much I'd like
to come and become a player in your team, but all the same, I'll use one more
opportunity to express how strongly I desire to volounteer in your EVS project
and how I'm convicted I have a lot to contribute with my experience and
personality as your team member. The changes and all the adjustements that I
would be confronted with do not frighten me, moreover, they challenge me. All
potential shortfalls that will occure I'm willing to compensate with my maximum
effort and doing my best. I'm very ambitious, prepaired to learn and ready to
adopt new skills. I would be very gratefull if you'd give me a chance to
represent all my qualities and ambitions in person, working for you. As I
already said, this opportunity means to me a lot and represents a big
possibility in enriching myself as a person as well as developing myself in
professional sense.

I thank you for your time spent reading this letter and I hope for a positive
response. If you have any questions, please contact me through --- or my
perssonal e-mail address ---

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

----

Dear Sir or Madam,

Working and living for one month in Bolivia has stirred my passion for other countries and cultures. I have ever since pursued a career that involves this passion and combines it with my strengths, interests and personality.

I would describe myself as a logical and analytical thinking person who enjoys taking on challenges and solving difficult situations. Using my own initiative and hard work to successfully complete various projects and get improvements done has always given me great pleasure. I always look forward to learn and I am especially interested in gaining more knowledge about business processes from the outset, particularly in the international field. What fascinates and interests me most are the political and cultural aspects that influence the international market.

The programme Export-Oriented Management combines my interests and passion. It would give me the possibility to gain the relevant knowledge to pursue a career in the industry where I see myself working in the future. The thought of being given the chance to learn another two languages in combination with receiving the know-how of international management, marketing or global political studies and much more, excites me enormously.

I have prepared myself for this course and my future career by achieving excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. I have gained international work experience and learned the importance of understanding other cultures, how to function well under pressure and the values of teamwork. Experience in financial management and my recent promotion to office manager have given me the opportunity to improve my general understanding of a business and management practices.

Generally, I would like to underline that by accepting me for a placement at your university, you would receive a highly ambitious, very hard working and mature student for whom it is most important to be able to study the right course.
