HI everyone! New to the forum and very anxious about my future!
It's a motivation letter concerning a postgraduate Chinese Studies programme.
I'd like to know if it's ok! Thank you!

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to express my interest in attending the Chinese Studies Masters programme at the University of __. In this letter I would like to present my reasons and objectives for choosing this programme and to elaborate on my general background.

First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I am a Greek student with a degree in Translation Studies. I studied at the __for four years, having completed my dissertation just recently. My field of expertise focuses on English and French translations to Greek and vice versa. By the time I decided to study translation I was already a proficient user of both English and French. The truth is that I developed an interest in foreign languages, and especially in English, at an early age thanks to my fatherâs English background and upbringing, given that he grew up in __and studied in the UK. During the completion of my degree I also studied Italian and Turkish for one year. Later on I decided to focus on Spanish, a very interesting language which I am currently studying.

Throughout my life I have been interested in learning many languages and becoming accustomed to different civilizations. Ever since I embarked on the undergraduate translation programme at the __, I have been thinking strongly to pursue further academic education concerning another language such as Chinese (Mandarin) which outnumbers any other language in the world. In addition to this, the Chinese civilization is one of the worldâs oldest continuous and most interesting civilizations and I would be thrilled to be given the chance to be a part of it. It is my true belief that the chosen programme will provide me both knowledge and experience, as well as expertise in Chinese Studies.

Due to the reputation of the University of __, I strongly believe that your offered postgraduate programme will be highly suitable for me. I have chosen the University of __ as it develops dynamically language skills by this two-year interdisciplinary programme which also includes a six-month full-time language study in China. My experience in the field of languages has taught me that the student should be in direct contact with the language in order to master it. During my undergraduate education at the __I had the chance to live in __ as part of a six-month compulsory training programme for the completion of my degree and I developed a completely different range of knowledge concerning the French language and civilization.

I am convinced that with my strong language learning background, explained by an obvious flair for languages which is a reflection of my outgoing personality, I will be able to live up to the programmeâs expectations and to make the most out of it by working hard and having strong motive. I would be more than glad to receive a positive response and to engage myself in this extremely interesting programme. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear members,

I am a Dutch scholar in my exam year of grammar school. Upcoming Friday I need to have sent in all my application papers for university. I saw the excellent help offered by all of you to correct motivation letters and give advise. I just finished my motivation letter and I would like some comments on it. I am applying for a university which is very selective. It is an international orientated institute and offers broad education (I want to study litarature, political theory, business and maybe some law) It is very intensive studying and I will be living on campus if everything turns out okÃ© and I will be accepted. But... only one out of five scholars get the chance to be accepted. So I can use all help offered by getting the best motivation letter ever. The yellow gaps represent fitting words I did not just come up. (sorry for some Dutch but thats for translation)

One special thing: I find it quite difficult to limit myself to two pages so if you have any advise on what to delete in this text it would be great (it is too long)

My motivation letter:

Hereby I am applying for a place in the liberal arts programme at University College Utrecht for fall 2008, and in this letter I will elaborate on the reasons of my motivation and why I am perfectly fit for the concept.

My name is Claire. I am a sixth form student at the Koningin Wilhelmina College in Culemborg, I will be graduating from grammar school (Dutch: gymnasium) in June 2008.

I must say I like all my subjects and in particular English and Social Studies. I started learning English from a young age and it has always felt like my second language. Sometimes I feel I can express myself better in English than in Dutch, or at least more beautifully.

I enjoyed the fact that my (former) secondary school is rather innovative. In 2006 Bizzgames was introduced; a simulation of a business environment. This is an excellent way of putting management and organisation skills into practice. Consequence was I came in first as a two-person team with a student I did not know. On the one hand working after school did result in less active extracurricular activities, on the other hand I did learn to â¦

I know people see me as an open-minded, ambitious, passionate and hardworking student. Academically I am a critical thinker. I am almost always passionately interested in a subject Travelling is one of my enduring passions. It gives me an indescribable feeling boundlessness.

From my point of view current students are definitely well educated; however we are also quite restrained by the borders of Europe. I think this attitude will no longer serve. We are naturally ignorant of â¦ I, on the contrary, am very driven and interested in breaking through this boundary. From these I want to get good the elements. I am eager to develop. I find it interesting to put economic/political problems into the pillory. I can be quite taken up by thinking of a balanced policy.

Having experienced the concept of liberal arts and science in 2006 my conviction to apply for University College has grown stronger as time passed. The completed Roosevelt Junior Academy days (see enclosed certificate) and the open day visited at University College Utrecht have only served as reinforcements. I am appealed by UCâs curriculum, campus, professors, students, students associations and ambiance. I felt at home immediately with the campus and I felt a connection with the students I spoke to. I want more than offered by general universities. General universities do not strive to exploit ones individual academic abilities and they do not offer academic excellence. I want to be challenged. My future prospects are at the limit of what I want to consider reachable by own means, and no less. This is because I know I will do the best I possibly can and therefore I identify my future with endless possibilities.

In summer 2007 I took an educational travel to Cambridge. I stayed in a host family, for the reason I wanted to experience British living closely. It gave me renewed my energy to focus on what I want to achieve and therefore made me so much stronger and more motivated. For me this was a very special/changing experience. I finished with the intensive English course, specialized in Academic English at Advanced level. My English has improved â¦ in England. My environment had continuingly existed of a very rich diversity of cultures, which I experienced as very inspiring. I think it takes quite some adaptability to get settled in a totally new country and culture, and I think this is a very important talent to posses. I can easily find a way and socialize in unfamiliar surroundings.

In my exam year an opportunity occurred. I was selected for the School of Economics programme. I signed up and I intensely wanted to participate, for several of itâs aspects appealed to me; the academic education, the English language in studying and specialising in one of my most favourable subjects. This rather demanding extracurricular activity I enjoyed fullest, I am convinced studying in English will increase my satisfaction of studying and turning to English education will cause least trouble. I wanted more of my education and this challenged me.

Furthermore I arranged I will not be making a general PWS, but to complete this in a more academic, specialized and scientific way at School of Economics (Utrecht University) in the British language.

I put a lot of energy and satisfaction into the art of debating. When I was fifteen, I joined the students association Utrecht Debating Society. Speaking in public now represents one of my skills. As a scholar I had to catch up the gap between me and the student members. This only stimulated my ability in learning faster. Besides regular debating I am very interested in performing eloquentia en Iâm considering making that one of my extracurricular activities in the future. I have also been a co-judge at the NK debating tournament 2007 in Tilburg. In my leisure time I like to â¦ in the ancient theory of pleading, especially to read the great works of Cicero, Socrates and Plato.

I am already making efforts to make arrangements to go abroad upcoming summer. My aunt and uncle are very active in Africa concerning charity and voluntary activities, with this connection I hope it is possible to obtain a safe and valuable place to analyze and learn about unbalanced political/economical systems, and experience helping people for whom I think I can contribute to transfer knowledge to people unable to get education. There are still two sides of the badge, because I think such an experience enriches me as a human being. I also like to analyze the as it seems bottomless situation.

I have a broad range of interests and I have quite a few requirements fit for a study to my personal wishes. My contribution to University College Utrecht would be valuable, if given the opportunity. One of the reasons I am so passionately firm about studying liberal arts and sciences is the great international orientation. I would be honoured to join/strengthen the Future Leaders Project. The living environment of a large diversity of cultures does seem only tremendously inspiring to me. Considering UCU students make use of â¦ a lot, my debating skills will definitely be an advantage for me and liveliness in class. My active class-participation will be a mentionable contribution. I would also like to be actively involved in several committees at University College Utrecht. In my high school there was no occasion to have been involved in MUN, Model United Nations. Since Iâm aware of the MUN at university level is offered at University College Utrecht Iâm determined to become member of this organisation.

UCU could give me the possibility to fulfil my academic needs, such as Future Leaders Project and an MUN-foundation. It will also shape me exactly fit for my future plans.

I think it is a huge prÃ© for a student ambitioning an academic international carreer to be all-round. UCU is able to offer, in my opinion, optimal âvormingâ. Highly academic skills, an intensive network with motivated people all over the world, an international âblikâ, broad but good knowledge and ability to speak English almost as a native speaker.

During my high school I have personally been through a hard time regarding my domestic situation and I have no doubt this had also restrained me in performing to my fullest academic capability. Especially in de 4^th and 5^th class I was most affected by this, and therefore my exam grades averages started at a lower rank. It took me a while to be able to remain least affected by this negativity with help from a psychologist. I managed to get my grades up with hard work and high grades, but considering my own personal capability this couldâve been a lot more and will be at University College Utrecht. I think it did make me a lot stronger as an individual. In my opinion a human must strive to take advantage of every event.

Enclosed you will find a form of recommendation from Dr. Verbraak and Dr. Filius. Mr Verbraak is my teacher of management and organisation. Mr. Verbraak knows me well as a student and as an individual. Mr Filius has been my mentor in the sixth class and has been most aware of my personal circumstances. Mr Visschers has been my English teacher for several years and is well aware of my English level of proficiency, enclosed you find his comments on this matter.

Finally, I consider myself a suitable candidate for this program. In my time at KWC I have really showed my motivation, both academically and socially. I hope that I have convinced you of my motivation and that you will grant me this opportunity.

To be successful in my chosen profession, I must know all the ins and outs of diplomatic discourse and be fluent in English. I think you need to be more specific.)

I have a passion for studying English and am especially interested in further developing my language skills in areas connected with diplomacy and politics. I must say without false modesty that I am possessed of great ability in studying languages. When I laid down the aim to enter the Moscow State University of International Relations, which is one of the top 5 universities in Russia, in less than two years from a zero level [knowledge] of English I came to the level that allowed me to pass a highly competitive exam with a mark sufficient to gain a scholarship for the whole period of studies. In the university I chose English as a first language (we have to choose at least two) which means that I had 10 academic hours of English a week, including both general English and political translation. Last summer I passed the State Exam in English (the last one before the graduation) with the highest mark possible. And I cannot even say it was extremely difficult as studing English is a great pleasure for me.

Finally, what else am I supposed to be equipped with besides the above mentioned? A good luck perhaps.{I am not sure this is a good idea! - Better to reiterate that you will value the chance of an interesting experience, and are ready to answer any questions they may have.}

I study Modern Applied Languages (LEA) at the UniversitÃ© de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest and I am currently looking for a 3-month work placement in a British translation company. This work placement will be the conclusion of my Bachelor.

My courses range from English and German to economics and law. I also passed a scientific Baccalaureate (the equivalent of the British A-Level): I had the chance to attend many different kinds of courses which is an advantage in translation.

I already had the occasion to see what the translatorâs job consists of. For example, I translated articles and lyrics for a bandâs fan site. In my courses in France, I had different translation courses (translation from French to English or from English to French, consecutive interpretingâ¦). I spent the second year of my degree abroad in Germany where I attended a German-English translation course.

Next year, I will apply for a master in translation either in France or abroad.

I am OR I would be available for this work placement from the 15^th February and am always available for further questions or for a possible interview.

I think you made very few grammatical mistakes. I felt I should change few words because you would sometimes use the same word twice (or the verb and the corresponding noun whithin the same sentence).
Definitely not as good as what you could get from a native but I sure did my best.

Thank you so much for your kind time. Your suggestion is very helpful, I have realized the problem, too. No one would feel like reading such a long letter.

You said in the reply that donât repeat the same information in the CV, so first of all, shall I delete paragraph [1]? I put it there just wanted to give the reader an overall image, but all the information could be found in my CV. I didnât mention the duty ( in paragraph [2]) and the example ( in paragraph [4]) in my CV, may I keep them?

I tried to shorten the letter, but it is still too long. I am not sure which part shall be modified. Would you look at it again? Please give me more suggestions. Thank you for your time.

[4]-The study and life in Japan
The first year was, as expected, tough and challenging. I need to adapt to the new life and began the study as soon as possible. Besides, I did not speak Japanese, which simply made the situation more stimulating. I managed to apply my best effort to get through all these difficulties. I benefit a lot from the first year; I learnt how to start a total different life effectively. Now, I have been used to the circumstances and enjoyed it very much. The PhD research is advancing smoothly and I get along very well with my colleagues. Beside of studies, I also participate in all kinds of volunteer works and local events. I am an active member in the campus and help to organize kinds of meetings and events. One specific example of these activities was in 2004, when the student-delegation of World Maritime University came to visit my university. While the challenges were great, we are convinced that our team had tried our best and our work was highly praised. Dear all,

I am a new user and I found here by chance when I tried to get some guidance of letter writing. I have read a lot of examples together with the comments, as well as the helpful posts of suggestions from MountainHiker. I would like to thank all the members for producing such a great forum. It helped me a lot.

I am now studying in Japan and is going to apply for a job in Switzerland. I have managed to follow the regular suggestions and have modified the letter many times by myself, but since this is my first time to write such a formal letter, I know there is a long way and it needs a lot of modification works. Would you please kindly take a look on my letter and tell me how to improve it?

I am afraid the story is too long, but how to make it looks clear and effective?

I am applying for an entry-level position with your company in Geneva office. The preferred field of employment would be the container transport operation and business management.

I have a Bachelorâs degree in International Shipping Management and a Masterâs degree in Transport Planning and Management both from XXX Maritime University, China. Currently, I am a full-time PhD student of XXX University, Japan. My research topics are container transport network analysis and competition strategies. The expected graduation time is October 2005.

After graduating from high school, I was enrolled by my favorite university: XXX Maritime University, which is one of the best maritime universities in China. During the four years study, I acquired wide and solid knowledge of international shipping management, together with firm foundation of mathematics, economies, laws and statistics. In 1999, as a nominated student, I passed the Masterâs Entrance Exams with top grades and started my further study in the same university and majored in Transportation Planning and Management. The three years study has widened my knowledge about transportation science, besides, I also involved myself in the practical sector works. From 2000 to 2002, I was the teaching assistance of my professor, my concentration and enthusiasm was highly appreciated by both the professor and the students. Due to my good performance, I was selected as one of the three student participants of a research team and took part in a project on human-resource evaluation supported by China XXX Shipping Company, XXX Branch. My duties included data collection and analysis, preparation of reports and presentations, the coordination work between the company side and our research team. It helped me to develop a strong analytical mind and interpersonal skills. Moreover, I learnt the value of teamwork during the two-monthâs project and became more solution-oriented. Furthermore, I found my interest toward real business management was evoked and strongly enhanced.

In my last year at XXX Maritime University, I was assigned the teaching assistant to a Japanese professor due to my excellent English skill and solid knowledge of shipping. He gave us lectures on container transport network analysis and my job was the two-way translation between Chinese and English. It not only enhanced my language skills but also evoked my interest of studying in different nations. After talking with the professor and expressing my desire to do PhD research in Japan, we found that our ideas were very well suited. Hence, he highly encouraged me to apply for the International Doctoral Course of XXX University because it offered exactly the professional courses I was eagerly to learn about, such as: game theory and business application. In October 2002, directly after my graduation from Masterâs course, I was selected, out of thousands of candidates all over the world, as one of the 550 selected Japanese government scholarship students. My focus lied on the business strategies and new trend of maritime industry, to be exact, the economic feasibility of mega-container ships as well as the business application of Game Theory.

The first year was, as expected, tough and challenging. I need to adapt to the new life and began the study as soon as possible. Besides, I did not speak Japanese, which simply made the situation more stimulating. I managed to apply my best effort to get through all these successfully even with very little guidance from my professor since he was not in Japan but teaching in World Maritime University until November 2003. I have had benefit from that period of time of how to start a total different life effectively and think more independently. After two and a half years living and studying here, I have been used to the circumstances already and get along very well with my colleagues.

The PhD research has been made considerable advancement during the past two and a half year and so far I have finished most of the work. Beside of daily studies, I actively participate in all kinds of volunteer works and local events also. Inside the campus, I am a lively member to help organize kinds of meetings and events. One specific example of these activities was in 2004, due to my excellent English skill and communication skill, I was assigned to lead a working team organizing the trip and presiding the welcome party when the student-delegation of World Maritime University came to visit my university. While the challenges were great, we are convinced that our team had tried our best and delivered to the guests an impressive party and very exciting trip. Outside of the campus, I also challenged several kinds of part-time jobs to enrich my experiences and get more chances to cooperate with different parties and matters.
