I am writing to apply for the advertised
PhD position in the project entitled ***.

As you see in my CV, I have been working on
my thesis entitled “Algae To Energy: A Thorough Investigation Of Biogas
Production And With Ultrasound Pretreatment Of Red Algae of The Baltic Sea To
Eliminate Environmental Degradation And To Explore Endless Source Of Energy” to obtain the degree MSc in Environmental
Science from ***, what is expected by June 2008. Anaerobic
digestion, biogas and GHG are my particular areas of interests what drive me to
conduct my research activities in similar field. Presently, just after finishing
the first batch experiment to investigate biodegradation potential of algae, I
have been working on continuous stirred reactors with the homogenized algae,
autoclaved and algae pretreated with ultrasound and four parallel batch
experiments with same co-digested substrate and treated materials as used in lab-digesters.
I found myself very interested in this field and having a good knowledge in the
entire procedure, plan and monitoring as well as excellent laboratory skill. Just
before my thesis work, I have been conducted investigation on GHGs emission and
measurement from a landfill project where my entire work was highly appreciable.

Beside other knowledge on environmental
issues, I have good computer skill and literature searching and sorting skill
what I have been trained from highly skilled professionals at ***
University Library. Moreover, my previous laboratory skills and achievements during
my bachelor in Agriculture allow me to suit for the position.

However, after reading the advertisement, it
seems to me that this is the appropriate position I have been looking for and
waiting for and I am the suitable candidate for the position. Though the
stipend is not very attractive, nevertheless I would gladly consider the
position, if I am offered, as the research theme covers my interest perfectly.

To recapitulate, as the Department of Civil
Engineering, *** has important research
activities in these areas, I would like to have the opportunity to develop its
PhD programme in this project, for which I am confident I have the skills,
knowledge and competence. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or my enclosed
referees for further quarries, if you have any.

Thank you very much for considering my
application and I look forward to hearing from you.

Internship Cover Letter Details

Any help "fixing" the following cover letter, would be greatly appreciated. I plan to send it to a research institute in the US which has a few internship positions available for students worldwide. In their own words, the cover letter should include a statement
of my specific research interests, contact details and relevant coursework and
grades received. Having discussed it briefly with some of my professors i ended up with this:

                                                                                                                                                                    "My contact details"

"Contact details of the institute's member responsible for the internship"

                                                                                                                             Date

Dear Dr. ***,

I am
writing in response to your posting for the *** Internship Program. I am
currently a final year Master’s student in *** at the University of ***,
and I would like to be considered for the internship position on the *** project. I am particularly interested in working on expanding the
simulation capability currently available within *** whose “evolution” I
have followed in the literature.

My academic background
includes the following relevant graduate courses:

Computer Programming, a course referring to C++
programming – both object oriented and structured programming - in which I
  received a grade of 9 (on a scale from 0 to 10).

Advanced Software Engineering, a course on design patterns,
the Single responsibility principle and refactorings (ongoing).

Advanced Artificial Intelligence, during which I was taught
Prolog, Constraint Programming, Constraint Logic Programming (using the
ECLiPSe platform), planning with constraints (including a project
concerning mixed initiative temporal planning with constraints), and
reasoning under uncertainty (MDPs, chapters 13 to 17 of the book
"Artificial Intelligence, A modern approach" by Stuart Russell
  and Peter Norvig). I
  received a grade of 9.

Neural Networks and Evolutionary
  Algorithms, dealing
with several neural network architectures as well as other machine
learning approaches, including the first five chapters of the book
"Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning" by Christopher M. Bishop
  (ongoing).

Other relevant courses from my undergraduate
studies (also in ***) include:

Artificial intelligence, which covered the first
twelve chapters of the AIMA textbook (including partial order planning). I received a grade of 10.

Object oriented programming, a course on Java programming
and UML. I received a grade of 9.

This semester I will begin working
on my Master’s Thesis, the topic of which is "***. It involves simulating "...". In
the future, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in ***, possibly by
extending my research in my diploma thesis.

It is my belief that I could
contribute effectively as a member of your program, which in turn would allow
me to continue to pursue my research interests and future academic career. I
consider this internship an ideal opportunity to obtain hands-on experience. Also,
it would greatly benefit me to collaborate with fellow interns and have as my
mentor Mr. ***.

I enclose a recent
curriculum vitae for your attention and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your
consideration.

Sincerely,

"My name & surname"

--

My doubts are as to:

Whether there are any grammar or syntactical errors

Should the cover letter have information on where i found their program advertisement? For example "I am
writing in response to your posting for the *** Internship Program, of which
I learned through an email from the *** googlegroup."?

The part "I am particularly interested in working on expanding the
simulation capability currently available within *** whose “evolution” I
have followed in the literature." in the first paragraph originally was "I would wish to be considered for the intership
position on the *** project, and if possible for the part of ***, of which I read and was particularly interested in, in
the paper “***” which was
presented in the *** Workshop on ***." Which version do you think is better?

If i should include the sentence 'Also,
it would greatly benefit me to collaborate with fellow interns and have as my
mentor Mr. ***." or maybe it sounds "fake" (although it is in fact true!)

In the original version of this cover letter, the last paragraph was
"Also, it would greatly
benefit me to have as my mentor Mr. ***, whose career in the *** and *** I think
of very highly, and collaborate with fellow interns, as until this time, I
haven’t had the opportunity to work in a multi-member research group. Finally,
travelling and actually staying in the United States has always been one
of my dreams, being an avid traveller, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able
to make this trip a reality due to its excessive cost." Was i right in replacing it?

Finally, should the courses' information also refer to the teacher who instructed me (especially since one of them has cooperated in the past with the internship's project mentor), or not?

Thank you in advance for any help given!

letter of motivation, help and suggestions wanted

Hi!
I'm applying for a volunteer work in few of the EVS projects (I don't know is it familiar to you - it's a kind of an exchange of students in purpose of learning a language and working on yourself by doing a job like an engagement in youth rights, or preparing a film festival or doing some cultural work, etc. - it's domaine of works is pretty various, but al of them require working with people) and I have to write a cover letter, but it has to be pretty general because I have to write only one letter wich will be used in all my applys. Also, people reading this kind of letter pretty much are students, young people, so I figured it would be better not to write so formal as usally. Or I'm I wrong?
I'd be very grateful if you'd give me any suggestions how to improve my letter writen below this text and if you could point out my gramatical mistakes, I'm sure there are a lot of them.
Thanks a lot, lots of kisses from Croatia!

Salut!

My name is ---, I'm a 22 years old student at 3rd year of
french and philosophy at ---. When finding out of this kind of volunteering I
immediately knew I want to be a part of it. With this letter I would like to
apply for the participation as a volunteer in your EVS project and through it I'd
like to bring you closer how deeply I would like to become a part of your team
and why I think you'd make a great decision choosing me.
You're probably asking yourself why I'm so sure of myself
and what is that what I can offer more than someone else? Well...

As I already mentioned, being a student of french language
and it's literature and also being an admirer of it's country's great history
and rich culture, I'm really eager to develop my language skills and to improve
my speaking french whilst gaining valuable experience and knowledge. As well,
I'd like to learn about other cultures and various people.

I started to learn french not before my first year of
college so this kind of opportunity would mean a great deal for my professional
as well for my personal improvement. I'm an highly motivated, hard-working,
tolerante and dynamic individual with expressed comunicating and organisation
skills. During my time as a student I gathered a big amount of experinece in
working with people in wide range of jobs (being a promotor, hostese,
waitresse) that I did as a member of the Student Service in my city. I also
volunteered at animal shelter for two years (Noina arka) and I have participated
in our Society of francophone students in Croatia for two years now. In year 2005. I went through a training curse
to be an animator at seaside resorts.

Like you see, I have kept myself busy.

Well, doing all that I learned I enjoy working with people
and that it fullfills me. And I'm really good at it. I easily adopt in any work
enviroment and in working as a part of a group. Although neither an individual
work that requires an initiative and responsable person with a sens of personal
organisation doesn't represent any problem to me; I act equally good in both
surroundings and I cope effectively with all kinds of demands put in front of
me.

I'm a computer literate and I speak, read and use both
english and french. But I also think that there's a lot more work in front of
me to achieve a level of a perfectly spoken french. Passively I use slovenian
and I also learned deaf-mute language for a year.

Privatly, I like sports and dancing. Depending of my free
time and my mood I ride my bike, I swimm, I run. But for the past year I put
myself mostly in ballet dancing lessons which I really enjoy. Also I adore to
read. Everything. Wether(?) it's a daily or weekly press, all sorts of
magazines, romans, Internet sites – from yellow pages to scientific articles,
arts to love themes – I swallow it all in one breath. Any gatherings or
activities of all kinds including people spending time together always will
drow my attention. I'm a big filmophile
and I enjoy music. And if you add a good cup of coffee with a fresh croissant
accompanying it, plus my family and friends, with whom I share all my interests
and free time, that's my winning choice.

I'm sure you have already got an idea of how much I'd like
to come and become a player in your team, but all the same, I'll use one more
opportunity to express how strongly I desire to volounteer in your EVS project
and how I'm convicted I have a lot to contribute with my experience and
personality as your team member. The changes and all the adjustements that I
would be confronted with do not frighten me, moreover, they challenge me. All
potential shortfalls that will occure I'm willing to compensate with my maximum
effort and doing my best. I'm very ambitious, prepaired to learn and ready to
adopt new skills. I would be very gratefull if you'd give me a chance to
represent all my qualities and ambitions in person, working for you. As I
already said, this opportunity means to me a lot and represents a big
possibility in enriching myself as a person as well as developing myself in
professional sense.

I thank you for your time spent reading this letter and I hope for a positive
response. If you have any questions, please contact me through --- or my
perssonal e-mail address ---

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

----
