My 2 cents:
I normally put "people" after "according to". For example:
According to our president
according to our teacher
In a way, "according to my opinion" sounds redundant to me. (that bit is already implied by "according to") No?

2. Alter and Change -- You can alter an appearance, an article of clothing or a plan. Maybe an alteration is a more "tangible" but "substantive" sort of change? I say that because we don't use "alter" for personality changes.
