Can't you see the DIFFERENCE between, "the parents of THEIR children" and "the parents of THE children"????
Does "the car" mean the same as "their car"? e.g.
i) I saw THE car.
ii) I saw THEIR car.

"The parents of their children" is NOT the same as "the legs of a chair". "The parents of the children" is the same as "the legs of the chair".
e.g.
They are the (natural) parents of that couple's (their) adopted children.
