Thanks for your help. I will try to focus more on the modal verbs, rather than the whole sentence.

Sh_t Avangi, I've always assumed you're a woman because of the way you take extra care to answer questions and go out of your way to provide "excessively" helpful information. These are qualities particular characteristic of the better sex (I mean gender in this case, not an action). I hope you take it as a compliment, cause I mean it that way. Serious. Anyway, just want to express a long over-due private thanks to you, many many thanks. Wonder why I never thought of clicking on your profile to do so. I didn't wanna do it on the forum, which is very public, and come across sounding real lame. But thank you again, you're a great teacher! Raen

A knowledge of/Knowledge of
Oh, thank you. I think I got it. I found this in HEINLE's NewBury House Dictionary of America Knowledge has several meanings: 1 an area of learning: The study of English (math, history, etc.) is a field of knowledge. 2 an understanding of s.t. and the ability to use that understanding through study and experience: She has a knowledge of mechanical things and knows how to fix cars. 3 information about or familiarity with s.t.: He has knowledge of the accident and how it happened. It is used as a countable or uncountable noun depending on the context. Thank you.

Thanks
Thank you both for your interesting answers. I didn't think of it this way but it does makes sense. The strange thing is, I have this thick grammar book here at home that doesn't even mention the issue, but it's something that comes up constantly in ordinary english. I'll have to dig further in other books. (Oh by the way I'm the original anon. This site is very interesting so I've created an account.)

hey!
Hey Avangi, There was a reply that you have given to the neither ..nor question and a part of it says You just try to follow the directions as best you can, and try to guess what's in the teacher's mind - and pray he's not too picky. Just wanted to know if 'as best you can' is fine or should it be 'as best as you can'. What's the difference? Cheers, Ashwitha
