HI

Does this sentence make sense to you:

In the Yucatan, a special class of diviners, consulted to ascertain the "will of the gods" and the spiritual nature of illness, utilize quartz crystal for divination.

Does it say that a special group of diviners from Yucatan talked to each other to find out what the will of the gods was and to know the origin of some illnesses, and they also used crystals for divination??? Or maybe they used crystals to find out about the will of the gods and about illnesses???

For me it's a clumsy sentence

'Consulted to ascertain the "will of the gods" and the spiritual nature of illness' is just an adjectival phrase that describes these people. Let's make the sentence into two sentences. ie

In the Yucatan, a special class of diviners utilize quartz crystal for divination.

These diviners are consulted to ascertain the "will of the gods" and the spiritual nature of illness.

For me it's a clumsy sentence I think that's because you were not understanding it correctly.Emotion: smile

These diviners are consulted to ascertain the "will of the gods" and the spiritual nature of illness.

I guess I understand it now. "consulted" means that people used to come to them and ask them about these things?

Thanks Clive!

Not 'used to'. 'Are consulted' is present passive. People consult/ask them.

Thank you very much!
One more question: This stone was prized for its prismatic fire.

Can you tell me how you understand "prizmatic fire"? Does it mean the same, in your opinion, as "fire prism"?

You can't say your version.

You can say "This stone was prized for its fire', but you can't say 'This stone was prized for its prism'.

OK. Thank you.
