Even though the manenger wore formally, he tried to look friendly to his employees. He talked to hid employees and joked with them during a break, to show them that he is more than a boss, he is a friend to/for them.

Even though the manager dressed formally, he tried to look friendly to his employees. He talked to them and joked with them during a break, to show them that he was more than a boss,

he was a friend to them. Better is . . . he was their friend.
