This quiz is given by the University of Cambridge as a free sample of Paper 3 (Use of English), Part 1 (Selective cloze) of the ESOL First Certificate in English (FCE), taken approximately at the upper-intermediate level.

This exam is easier than the CAE (I posted an example of a similar exercise at the CAE level here ) ... but it's not that easy! Emotion: smile

A love of travelling

For Nigel Portman, a love of travelling began with what’s a ‘gap year’. In common with many other British teenagers, he chose to take a year out before to study for his degree. After doing various jobs to some money, he left home to gain some experience of life in different cultures, visiting America and Asia. The more adventurous the young person, the the challenge they are likely to themselves for the gap year, and for some, like Nigel, it can in a thirst for adventure.
Now that his university course has to an end, Nigel is just about to leave on a three-year trip that will take him around the world. What’s more, he plans to make the whole journey using only means of transport which are by natural energy. In other words, he’ll be mostly on bicycles and his own legs; and when there’s an ocean to cross, he won’t be taking a cut by climbing aboard a plane, he’ll be joining the crew of a sailing ship . As well as doing some mountain climbing and other outdoor pursuits along the way, Nigel hopes to on to the people he meets the environmental message that lies behind the whole idea

I am always told to read the whole text first and to fill in the gaps with your own words before reading the possible answers so that you can have an idea of what the answer might be. You also need to pay attention to the words that follow (prepositions) the "unknown" ones because they are, most of the time, key to the right choice. Emotion: smile
