Hello everyone,

I've got some questions that I want a native speaker of English to answer them for me...It's all about what it is mostly used, I can literally translate, but I don't want to sound like a foreigner. (between brackets means I'm not sure, please correct my questions as well). THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

1.What question do ask to know the number of stars that a certain hotel has?

I was thinking of these two: How many stars is your hotel? or What is your hotel rating?

2.At my university we register for the courses we want to take during the coming semester on line, please correct my questions as well, so when the registration period starts, is it correct to ask a friend of mine: when does your enrollment window open? I heard that in a movie but I am not sure if I can use it when the registration is done on-line.

3.While registering; sometime the Internet (gets stuck, what is the proper name of/for this case?) because so many people will be using the site at the same time. What do you call such a case? I mean, let's say you want to ask a friend of yours if he has registered for English 303, so his answer would be: not yet; THE CASE...

4.You are trying to register ( a course or for a course?) but the problem is that you have started late so that all section are (full or what do you call it? fully occupied?) now. Means no more available seats for you in any section except in a very late one. So is it correct to say: I had to register English 303 (at?) 6 to 7

5.Is there a name for the process in which you move from one section to another upon your professor approval? And how can you ask a professor to move you from section 1 to 2 for example?

6.Do you need an article? Put your mobile phones on (THE?) silent mode?

7.Your are sitting on a bus or (a? do you need to repeat the article after and & the coordinating conjunctions) plane and the passenger in front of you is sitting with the back of his seat is so close to you, how can you ask him to move his seat back because you are not comfortable? After you ask the passenger to move, he would ask why? Please give me a good response describing your uncomfort.

8.The professor left class after it ended, but you stayed inside because you are still writing what is on the board. Your friend calls, what can you say to tell him what you are doing?

9.On an exam, you got 25 out of 50. I would say: How much did you get?

Can the answer be: I borderlined?

10.what question do ask to what exam your friend is taking tomorrow? Math, history...

THANKS ALOT.
1. How many stars does your hotel have, four, three,...?

2. When can you start registering online?

3. The website is jammed. Too many people on it.

4. The only English 303 class I could get is at 6 PM. All the others are filled.

5. This cannot be done once you register. So pick your courses carefully when registering.

6. Put your cell phones on silent mode when in class.

7. You could try moving your seat back. If he moves his seat forward, then he will be uncomfortable.

8. I'm still in the classroom copying what the professor wrote on the board.

9. I got a 25 on the exam.

10. What kind of exam are you taking tomorrow?
Hi,

I've got some questions that I want a native speaker of English to answer them for me...It's all about what it is mostly used, I can literally translate, but I don't want to sound like a foreigner. (between brackets means I'm not sure, please correct my questions as well). THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

1.What question do ask to know the number of stars that a certain hotel has?

I was thinking of these two: How many stars is your hotel? No, say eg How many stars des your hotel have?

or

What is your hotel rating? OK

2.At my university we register for the courses we want to take during the coming semester on line, please correct my questions as well, so when the registration period starts, is it correct to ask a friend of mine: when does your enrollment window open? I heard that in a movie but I am not sure if I can use it when the registration is done on-line.

You could say that, but simpler is

'When does on-line enrollment start?'

The system froze up.

4.You are trying to register ( a course or for a course?) but the problem is that you have started late so that all section are (full or what do you call it? fully occupied?) now. Means no more available seats for you in any section except in a very late one. So is it correct to say: I had to register for / in English 303 (at?) 6 to 7

I think you'd speak of 'sessions', not 'sections'.

5.Is there a name for the process in which you move from one section to another upon your professor approval? And how can you ask a professor to move you from section 1 to 2 for example?

Ask for 'a transfer', say you 'would like to transfer from . . . to . . . '.

6.Do you need an article? No

Put your mobile phones on (THE?) silent mode?

7.Your are sitting on a bus or (a? do you need to repeat the article no after and & the coordinating conjunctions) plane and the passenger in front of you is sitting with the back of his seat is so close to you, how can you ask him to move his seat back because you are not comfortable?

eg Excuse me, do you mind if I ask you to put your seat up a liitle?

After you ask the passenger to move, he would ask why? Please give me a good response describing your uncomfort.

Sorry, but I don't have quite enough room. I'm not sure if this is a good reason. You have the same amount of room available as he does.

8.The professor left class after it ended, but you stayed inside because you are still writing what is on the board. Your friend calls, what can you say to tell him what you are doing? I'm just copying down what's on the board.

9.On an exam, you got 25 out of 50. I would say: How much did you get? No. eg What did you get?

Can the answer be: I borderlined? Not a good answer. eg I just scraped by. I just passed by a little.

10.what question do ask to what exam your friend is taking tomorrow? Math, history...

eg What exam do you have tomorrow?

4.You are trying to register ( a course or for a course?) but the problem is that you have started late so that all sections are (full or fully subscribed or what do you call it? fully occupied Emotion: no?) now. I feel very cramped.

8.The professor left class after it ended, but you stayed inside because you are still writing what is on the board. Your friend calls, what can you say to tell him what you are doing? I am still taking notes for the class.
