I was about to use a common synonym for "fishing expedition" with the word "hunt," but the first word didn't come out. It's not a witch hunt, not a snipe hunt, but a radiating search for a particular desired result with a small but significant chance of success the kind of hunt you might expect Russian materials scientists to embark on for an alloy with a specific set of properties. I don't think it was a treasure hunt or a scavenger hunt, either. What kind of hunt am I forgetting?

I don't think there's a set phrase, which may be why Glenn can't think of it I'd just use "a (whatever it is they're looking for) hunt". In the example, "an alloy hunt".
