I was about to use a common synonym for "fishing expedition" with the word "hunt," but the first word didn't come out. It's not a witch hunt, not a snipe hunt, but a radiating search for a particular desired result with a small but significant chance of success the kind of hunt you might expect Russian materials scientists to embark on for an alloy with a specific set of properties. I don't think it was a treasure hunt or a scavenger hunt, either. What kind of hunt am I forgetting?

I don't think there's a set phrase, which may be why Glenn can't think of it I'd just use "a (whatever it is they're looking for) hunt". In the example, "an alloy hunt".

A job hunt? Hunt and peck? Bargain-hunting? Hunter-gathering? Something to do with the Holy Grail? A quest?
Why not "treasure hunt"?
Are you sure that the expression you're looking for goes with "hunt"? Might it be a "search"? Carrying out a search pattern?
Or a wild goose chase.
