Are these sentences grammatical?
a) "I like to wander about the city."
b) "I like to wander by the city."

An American would understand that but would never say it. We wander around a city.

Unlikely. A city is too big for you to be by it.

[about / around / through]
(You probably want one of these.)

'wander by the city' seems a little unusual. It means 'wander near the city'. You'd probably say 'wander in the suburbs' for that.
