When writing about academic subjects such as sociology or Urban Planning, when do we capitalize and when do we use lowercase? Thanks.

Hope this helps:
1. The Sociology 211 lectures are boring. ( a specific sociology subject)
2. I have never liked sociology. (a general reference to sociology)

(exception to be made for foriegn languages ... always capped!)

The above rule is helpful, but remember that any field related to a language should always be capitalized. Thus:
1. The English 211 lecture was boring. (a specific English subject)
2. I never liked English. ( a general reference to English)
