It could be relaxing or irritating, depending on how you feel at the moment.

If the 'depending on' in bold was replaced with 'according to ' as:

It could be relaxing or irritating, according to how you feel at the moment.

would it still sound natural?

Hello Taka, a cheery Sunday to you.

I would say possible, but less common.

To my mind, "depending on" establishes the causal relation, whereas "according to" simply creates a link:

1. depending on my mood = my mood determines it

2. according to my mood = one mood is linked to X, another to Y

I would say that #2 is implicit in #1.

All the best,

MrP

Hi, P!
MrPedanticI would say that #2 is implicit in #1.

So you think #1 is comprehensive in its meaning? In other words, the description of #2 is more specific?
I think #2 is less specific: #2 relates, but #1 causally relates.

All the best,

MrP
I see.

Thanks, P!
