I recently read a piece of news in Finland's biggest daily Helsingin Sanomat. The reply to a question by an American teenage beauty queen had been translated into Finnish. As her reply didn't make much sense to me, I checked the [url=

version.[/url] Apart from some Americans not having maps, what do you think is in her opinion the reason 20 percent of Americans can't locate the US on a world map?

Interviewer: "Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the US on a world map. Why do you think this is?"

Lauren Upton: "I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and I believe that our education like such as South Africa and uh, the Iraq everywhere like such as and I believe that they should our education over here in the US should help the US, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for our children."

Poor girl had a brain melt-down trying desperately to find an answer that doesn't insult Americans (and make her lose the contest for being anti-American). She could hardly turn round and say 'because one in five Americans are thick as ****', now could she.

Before any Americans jump on me - that is NOT my opinion on Americans.

The survey seems hokey anyway. A fifth of ALL Americans? That's what I'd expect of any country once you include all the babies, young children, people with learning disabilities, older people with problems etc...

It is a funny anecdote though. I wonder if she'll ever live it down.
Cool Breeze20 percent of Americans can't locate the US on a world map?
That's not possible... 20 percent? Whoa...

Well, there are people who are such idiots that you think "Hey, this one just broke the record for the most moronic moron". But the fact is that it seems to me every day someone breaks the record... You just need to turn on the TV and watch some news, or read the newspaper, or even better, go take a look on youtube or myspace... there are real world records there.

But that's not only true for Americans... I think it's true for most countries where people are supposed to have an higher level of education, so you are "surprised" when something happens. Many Italians broke the record for the most moronic moron several times too... Really.

It's not polite to judge about all the nation or a really good part of it, but there are people who cannot read maps and think they don't need it. Well, it's quite comon to be asked by an American how long it will take us to get from Paris to New York by CAR, because the railway is too slow. Hope, it's an exception
20 percent !?!? i thought these people were smart..... i'm very dissapointed in these people, and well, the beauty queen, everyone knows those aren't very smart:P
I have seen a few articles on Internet mocking Americans for their ignorance and stupidity. I remember seeing video interviewing Americans who mistake Australia as Iran, and some who don't know how to add fractions. I'm not sure how true it is. It could be just criticism out of jealousy and even hatred. I'd appreciate if anyone especially Americans could tell us if it's really a general problem of their country. But one undeniable fact is that the US has the largest number of Nobel laureates, and she is most advanced in many, if not most, areas of research and development. If the general public is so ignorant, how can this happen? It really puzzles me.
