Hello,

I wrote another essay, and I'd be very appreciated if you take a look. Any critique is welcome.

Topic: "Parents are the best teachers. Yes? No? Why?"

Essay:

First, let us define the term teaching as a process of transmitting useful knowledge from one person to another. The statement claims that parents are the best in teaching, implying a comparison between professionally trained teachers and students' parents, who are not professional teachers themselves. To answer whether it is true or not, it is necessary to enumerate the factors the teaching process depends on:

1) Whether a teacher possesses the knowledge to be transmitted, and to what extent.
2) Whether a teacher is able to effectively transmit knowledge to students, or, in other words, how strong are the pedagogical skills of a teacher.
3) Whether a teacher practises the personal approach or works with students as with a mass.
4) How much time a teacher spends on a single student.

The first factor should be considered in a context of a particular kind of knowledge, while the other three may be considered out of this context. Let us analize the last three factors first.

In most cases trained teachers are more proficient in pedagogy because they have got the appropriate training. So, regarding this factor, professional teachers are better than parents.

The factor of using the personal approach could be related to the presence of pedagogical skills, but it makes sense to distinguish it as a separate factor, and further analysis reveals why. In most cases one's parents will teach their child exactly that is necessary for him or her, while not every teacher works with one's students personally. So, here parents are more promissing if none of other factors is taken into account.

Concerning the time one can spend working with a student, it strongly depends on the teacher's load, e.g., the number of students in class, and on the opposite site it depends on how much time parents can spend at home. The teachers load depends on a particular school, syllabus, and so forth. The time a parent can spend at home depends on the kind of job one has. It is hard to say who is the best in general if take into account only this factor.

To analyze the impact of the first factor, let us classify the types of knowledge.

a) A fundamental knowledge, which includes knowledge of how to walk, to speak, to brush one's teeth, and so forth.
b) A school-level knowledge.

c) A special college- or university-level knowledge.

Every adult person possesses fundamental knowledge, so here neither professional teachers nor parents have any advantage. But not every parents may still have a good knowledge of everything that is being taught at school, though some parents have. And it's much less probable, that parents possess the knowledge being taught at the college or university their child is studying at. So, the more secific the knowledge, the more advantageous professional teachers are.

In each particular case it is necessary to consider at least all the factors listed above to answer the question of who are the best in teaching – professional teachers or student's parents. A universal answer to this question doesn't exist.

Thanks in advance.

Hi again,

I have 3 quick comments on glancing at this.

Use third person. Don't say 'Let us'.

Don't say e.g., say 'for example'.

In an essay, never number things as a/b/c or 1/2/3. That kind of organization is fine in, for example, a business or scientific report. But never in an essay.

I'll let somebody else offer you opinions on the rest of this, as it's good to get different views.

Clive, once more thanks for your comments.

> Use third person. Don't say 'Let us'.

I am trying hard to follow this advice you have already given me on the previous
essay. But in some cases I still cannot resist the temptation to address a writer and
reader at once using "we" and "us", since this style is inherent for scientific writing.
Hi,

Just don't forget that an essay and scientific writing are not necessarily the same thing. Emotion: smile

Hello,

I rewrote the essay in accordance with all the remarks provided above and shortened it almost in half. If anyone may take a look, I would be very appreciated.

Essay rev.1:

The statement claims that parents are best in teaching, implying a comparison between professionally trained teachers and student's parents, who are not professional teachers themselves. To answer whether it is true or not, it is necessary to analyze the factors that the teaching process depends on.

The first factor is whether a teaching person possesses all the knowledge to be taught and to what extent. In regard to fundamental knowledge, that is, the knowledge of how to walk, how to speak, how to brush one's teeth, and so forth, both competing groups are equally firm, since every adult person posseses such kind of knowledge. Regarding the school-level knowledge, professional teachers look more favorable, because not every parent still remembers the school syllabus. As to the university-level knowledge, it is even more unlikely that parents whould know what to teach. So, the more specific the knowledge gets, the more advantageous professional teachers look.

Other factor to be considered is whether a teaching person has teaching skills. In regard to fundamental knowledge, again, both groups are similar, since it is not necessary to own any special skills to teach life basics. However, the school-level teaching requires some pedagogical skills, which not each parent possesses in contrast with professional teachers, all of whom are pedagogically prepared. So, regarding teaching skills, professional teachers win.

One more reason to be taken into account is whether a teacher works with one's students personally, or a teacher works with the whole class as with a mass. Parents may apply the completely personal approach, since the number of children in family in most cases is not too high, and it is possible to pay enough attention to each child. On the other side, professional teachers in most cases have quite numerous classes, which makes it difficult for them to spend much time dealing with a single student. Private teachers are an exception, as they dealing with a single student or few . But in general case, parents are able to teach more personally.

Summarizing, it may be concluded that it is necessary to consider all the factors listed above to answer the question of who are the best in teaching – professional teachers or student's parents. A universal answer to this question doesn't exist.

Thanks in advance.
