Life in wooden houses:

To live in the nature is a wish of a contemporary human being, who is surrounded with all the products and information of a modern society. The television set, radio, car, computer, mobile phone, internet,…are the things that surround us and dictate the pace of our lives. We have almost lost a contact with the nature and its environment. Just to remind you how we admire the wooden houses in Haloze, how we like the shacks of Velika Planina, and how we cannot get over our surprise at beautiful houses of Gorenjska.

In the past the wooden houses made of timber used to be a home to those who could afford a house. The house was safe, warm in winter and pleasantly cool in summer…The homeland of the wooden houses is , where they defy even the extremely wild weather. In 20th century the construction of brick houses came into fashion which became a symbol of living standard. There was a false belief that the wooden houses could not defy external influences such as moisture, sun, UV rays…Fortunately that belief did not prevail over the reason. The power crisis has brought back the wood as the building material and has caused the surge in construction of wooden houses. The wood is a material that preserves not only the nature but also the health of a human being who lives with it.

Why a log building?

  • Fire and earthquake safety

It is natural for the potential buyers to be concerned about the fire. The wood is inflammable material, but in comparison with concrete and steel it is more fire endurable-it gives in later. It means that in case of fire , a log building gets charred and the heat does not spread further. In practice it means that it is possible to save people and objects from the burning log house and it is also a lot easier that from the standard built house. The most important is that the wood does not produce poison gases when burning, which is the most common cause of deaths in the case of fire.

Log houses also have a high-level earthquake security, since the standard house is up to 3-times heavier! So the earthquake’s force that hits the building is proportionally lower and the caused damage is minimal.

· Air conditioning in a log house

When the environment we live in has a positive effect on us, we can talk about a healthy residence. The wood absorbs redundant moisture from the room and emits it back when there is a lack of it. Avarage moisture content of wood when a house is under construction is 12-16%. But the wood is a natural material and therefore responds to external influences. It means that the moisture content of wood is not constant but it varies depending on the seasons and weather.

· Economy: wooden house is energy efficient residential unit. Wood is a perfect warmth and sound isolator, therefore its characteristics are one of the top advantages a wooden object has to offer. Log walls absorb heat and accumulate it which means that our home warms much faster than it cools down. Heating savings in comparison with standard house are between 20-30% according to the institution National Bureau of Standards (NBS –USA). More…

· Ecology Log house can be contemporary, huge and with modern design what makes a healthy and natural life for residents possible- a life in contact with nature! Wood is a framework of every household and its characteristics definitely make it the most ecological among the building materials. Wooden houses make smaller climatic changes since CO2 accumulates in wood which would otherwise be emitted to the environment from the combustion and would contribute to the greenhouse effect. A number of families willing to live in a healthy microclimate is rising. A healthy way of living and a positive influence of our houses on our well-being are motives for purchase!
