One day, Wang found a glass bottle stopper. He polished it thoroughly until it sparkled in the sunlight. Then he took it to Tien's shop, and tried to sell it to him as genuine diamond.

How was Wang going to cheat the jeweller?

He was going to sell the glass bottle stopper as diamond.

Is the answer to the question correct? Is the word 'genuine' needed?

How was Wang going to cheat the jeweller?

He was going to sell the glass bottle stopper as a diamond.

Is the answer to the question correct? Is the word 'genuine' needed? 'a diamond' is correct, and 'a genuine diamond' is even more correct. Don't forget to include 'a'.

It may be just like this:

Then he took it to Tien's shop, and tried to sell it to him "as if it were a genuine diamond."

Then he took it to Tien's shop, and tried to sell it to him "as if it were a genuine diamond."

Is 'a' necessary? The object is a glass bottle stopper.
>Is 'a' necessary?

Yes, otherwise it means to me not not diamond seen as a (piece of) jewelry, but the diamond seen as a mineral/its material.

Think "as if it were genuine iron."
Marius

"as if it were a genuine diamond."

Is the word 'genuine' necessary. If I say, "... as if it were a diamond", does it not mean that it is not a fake? Is it not understood that it is genuine?

Genuine is necessary here, because of the context, which involves cheating.

You want to insist that he wanted to present it as a true/genuine diamond.
There are a lot of synthetic diamonds. So "as if it were a diamond" is fine, but "as if it were really a diamond" or "as if it were a genuine diamond" is very clear.
