1) the sky was warm gray(what soes it look like? why warm?)
In my mind, I envision a hot and humid summer day with dark clouds moving in which signals a thunder storm is on the way.

2) ventilator was hissing in and out
Not sure what kind of ventilator you are referring to here...it may be the kind that attaches to a person to help him breathe. In which case, as the machine forces the air to go in and out of the lungs, it makes the hissing sound.

3) what kind of windows are crank windows ? (does it have to do with handle?)
It's the kind you have to turn to make the window open and close, similar to the ones you have in your car (older models). There are some crank windows for the house which fans in and out (instead of going up and down as in an automobile).

4) what kind of hammer is shingle hammer? (I saw it, but what is it used for-shingles?)
I am not sure, since I am not familiar with roofing or construction work in general. But I'd assume that a shingle hammer is used for either removing old shingles and/or nailing down new ones.

5) standing water (rain water?)
It could be rain water. It's any puddle of water which has collected at a place because it has nowhere to drain itself.
