Why on earth complicate matters by using words like vector. Keep your examples easy to understand. If the student doesn't understand the distinction between 'modal' and 'auxiliary', how on earth are they going to understand words like vector ? However, the author is correct.... I think... it's taken me 25 minutes to work out what he's on about.

This is ,generally speaking, a problem within education. Academics that know their onions, but are incapable of explain ideas in simple English. C minus for the author... possible educated beyond his intelligence !

Thanks for pointing that out. I've added a note to the post.
My understanding of a modal verb is that
a] it does not take an "s" when used in the 3rd person singular, and
b] it is not a verb on its own.

a] "She can sing" (no "s" at the end of "can"), but "she is singing" (the "s" form of the 3rd person singular of "to be").
b] The auxiliaries "be" "do" and "have" can be used on their own, as in "I am (BE) happy because she has (HAVE) a car that doesn't (DO) make noise".

My understanding of a helpful reply to non-native English speakers is one that is short. I have found a few replies in this thread to be too long to be helpful.
