Students: Are you brave enough to let our tutors analyse your pronunciation?
Hi. My mother has been to Malaysia once. Her friend there told her that Islamic women had to cover their faces and wear very long coats only when they were in public places; but at home, where there were their husbands, fathers, sons..only, they could wore whatever they wanted ( actually, my mother's friend used the word 'quite sexy'). I was very surprised and curious while hearing that. Is that ok for Islamic women in all islamic countries? I really want to know and don't intend to insult or something like that. My knowledge of Islam is very little, and honestly, in my country many people find this religion miraculous, a bit frightening ( i'm so sorry if this word make you upset), too strict (a bit lack of humanity) and it has so much gender priority ( i mean: men are much more respected than women). I hope someday I can understand more about this religion and change my point of view as well as other people's. Thank you
Dear Michaela,

I am trying to answer your questions as best as I can.

Regarding head and face covering

Definetely, there is no such obligation to cover face or head according to Qur'anic teaching. Qur'an just stated that women have to clothed modestly. Of course, there would be various interpretations among Islam followers regarding this issue.

Regarding a frightening religion

There would not be so many educated people follow Islam if Islam were such a frightening religion. I do understand that your perception of Islam has been developed from incomplete informations. It is nce to know that you are trying to be fair by asking information from different point of view.

Regarding too strict

Well, Islamic legal system ( Sharia ) is a quite flexible legal system. It has step by step approaches in applying Islamic laws ( Fiqh ) in society. Islamic Laws ( Fiqh ) too, are flexible laws, they usually have multiple options for different cases, for Instance, Islamic criminal law is not merely contains criminal acts and punishments as usually understood by uninformed non muslims. The problem is that sometimes people, including some muslims, do not have an appropriate understanding that Fiqh and Sharia are different things

Regarding gender priority

Men are not respected higher than women in Islamic teaching. Men and women are equal, however there some differences in their "Rights and obligations". Islam teaches that men's-obligations are the rights for women while women's obligations are men's rights.

Those are my simple answers, eventhough they would not satisfy your need, I hope it will motivate you to gain more appropriate informations about Islam.
Dear kabayan

Thanks for your explanation. I think I have realized a bit about the difference between Islam and the way people applied it in their lives

By the way, could you give me a link to a website which provides reliable and fair information about Islam?

Could you explain this part? I'm not sure I understand who has the obligation and who has the right? Maybe you could give a few examples? Thanks.
