Hello, everyone,

“When people think about the development of cities, rarely do they consider the critical role of vertical transportation. In fact, each day, more than 7 billion elevator journeys are taken in tall buildings all over the world. Efficient vertical transportation can expand our ability to build taller and taller skyscrapers. Antony Wood, a Professor of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, explains that advances in elevators over the past 20 years are probably the greatest advances we have seen in tall buildings. For example, elevators in the Jeddah Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, under construction, will reach a height record of 660m.”

[Q] Which is the better one as the theme for this paragraph?;

1) the influence of elevators on building constructions.

2) the effect of vertical transportation on the expansion of cities.

While I think 2) above is better, your opinion would be much appreciated. If none, please propose a better one.

In spite of the generality in the first sentence that relates the development of cities to vertical transportation, most of the paragraph is about the fact that new and improved elevator technology enables the construction of taller buildings, so 1) seems closer to the theme of the paragraph.

Hi, CJ, appreciate yours. I thought "the external development of cities owing to new technological advancements of elevators" is almost similar to "the expansion of cities due to large buildings like the Jeddah Tower with height record of 660m", etc., even though the first sentence doesn't explicitly specifies it.

Emotion: tongue tied I don't see "the expansion of cities due to large buildings like the Jeddah Tower" in the text. Am I missing something?

Here's the only reference to expansion I see:

Efficient vertical transportation can expand our ability to build taller and taller skyscrapers.

Yes, you're right but my previous deduction was based on the last sentence of this paragraph beginning with "For example". Am I wrong? For your reference this is one of the test problems for our high school students.

Thank you for that context. I think I need to go back to high school because I'm struggling with this one. Emotion: smile

deepcosmosmy previous deduction was based on the last sentence of this paragraph beginning with "For example".

Well, it says that the elevators in the Jeddah Tower are an example of the great advances in elevator technology over the past 20 years, which is more about elevators than about urban expansion. Advances in elevator technology seems to me to be more like 1) the influence of elevators on building constructions than like 2) the effect of vertical transportation on the expansion of cities.

I see how the construction of the Jeddah Tower is implicitly the expansion of a city, but even from the title of the article you linked to, I think the writer considers this a secondary point.

I suppose the answer key has 2). I'm going to flunk this course! Emotion: big smile

You're right the answer key shown by the teacher is 2). I think he/she is considering 'the development of cities' close to 'the expansion of cities'. Really appreciate your comments, CJ.
