Use it when the prescription does not call for any timed dosage.

Hi,
AnonymousHow to use abbreviatin - as and when needed in med. prescription?
It is abbreviated as "PRN or prn" or even it can be s.o.s ( si opus sit )

PRN/prn = pro re nata ( Latin ); as needed ( English ).

For example: ibuprofen ( pain killer )

1.ibuprofen xxx mg PRN/prn = Take ibuprofen as needed.

2. ibuprofen xxx mg s.o.s = Take ibuprofen if there is a need.

Now, let me know what you have understood about those two examples. There is a difference between those two examples. Can you

identify the difference?

Alas, there is no abbreviation for the exact words "as and when needed".

There are, however, the following:

PRN = "As Needed" (from the Latin pro re nata). (also written in lowercase as p.r.n.)1.

SOS = "If needed" (from the Latin: si opus sit)1.

Hope this helps.

Whenever a medication is prescribed as prn...then medication prescription safety praactices also require the following to be written

1 - The indication for taking the drug

2 - The maximum number of doses (frequency) of the drug which can be given in a day

For Example

Tab. Paracetamol 500 mg PRN ( Indicated if temperature is more than 38 'C. Maximum frequncy q4hour. Do not exceed 6 tablets per day)
