Will 'as' be better to use than 'when' in all three examples?

1) James comes out of the building. His friends whistle and whoop as/when they spot him.

2) Jenna stops and takes out her phone. And as/when she lets go of the shopping cart, it starts rolling down the sidewalk.

3) The crowd parts to leave Jenna standing alone. James eyes widen as/when he sees her.

Not for me. I'd use 'when' in all three.
