As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill. As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again. -- Gone with the Wind

That part is spoken by the character Scarlett in the movie Gone with the Wind. What is she saying? She would go hungry when she is going through whatever it is but once it's over she is determined never to go hungry again. What does this mean? Please guide me. Thanks.

Hi,

not going to beat me

When it is over, she will never allow herself to be hungry again.

Thanks a lot, Clive.

I think once it's over she would work hard that never ever she has to go through such hard times again. Does this mean something particular in the context of the movie (assuming you've watched it) or the novel which it is based on? Please let me know.
Hi,

Yes, that's the idea. She is determined to survive and endure, at any cost.

Clive

The North burned their crops and took anything of value from their plantations literally leaving them starving in some cases. Scarlet went hungry to feed her family and the people who stayed with her on Tara. She did everything she could to keep Tara and try to make it great again. Doing ANYTHING to survive and have her family survive and keep her land.

In the movie it only shows a little of the hardship of no food when they are trying to make a few vegetables feed everyone on Tara. Anyone who has been hungry will relate to this and anyone trying to feed their family and keep it together will also.
