Hello!

I have an issue with that word. Though I know, that auxiliary spells that way I very often encounter a spelling "auxilary" even in proof-read texts. Can you tell me the difference please? Is it an obsolete variant or just a mistake or maybe another word?

Hi,

I have an issue with that word. Though I know, that auxiliary spells that way I very often encounter a spelling "auxilary" even in proof-read texts. Can you tell me the difference please? Is it an obsolete variant or just a mistake or maybe another word?

It just seems like a spelling mistake to me.

The root of the word is the Latin adjective 'auxiliaris', meaning 'helping', which suggests the 'i' has always been present in the word.

Best wishes, Clive
