Hi

I was talking to the sherpas and told them that the deals would be done or undone based on the small print. I asked them to look up from the numbers, look up from the statistics and try to imagine a different future where we didn't accept that a disease like malaria was with us and there was nothing we could do about it.

1. Does it mean that decisions would either be taken or not and they would be written down on a piece of paper?

2. Is he saying he wanted them to imagine a world in which people would pretend that there is no such an illness and finally (because all the people around would be passive) it would be too late to do anything about it, to fight with it?

Hi,
I was talking to the sherpas and told them that the deals would be done or undone based on the small print. I asked them to look up from the numbers, look up from the statistics and try to imagine a different future where we didn't accept that a disease like malaria was with us and there was nothing we could do about it.

1. Does it mean that decisions would either be taken or not and they would be written down on a piece of paper? No. It means that the deal will be completed or not completed, depending on the very small details.
Think of a contract, where the minor details are all written at the bottom or on the back in very small letters. This is called 'the fine (ie small) print'.

2. Is he saying he wanted them to imagine a world in which people would pretend that there is no such an illness and finally (because all the people around would be passive) it would be too late to do anything about it, to fight with it?
He means this. Don't just passively think that malaria is unavoidable and that we can do nothing about it.

Best wishes, Clive

I hope these two sentences are from separate sources, they certainly make no sense when juxtaposed like this. So, working on the assumption that they are unrelated.

1. In AmE the term is "fine print." It means (often literally) the print that is added to a contract or other such document that is in a much smaller font than the main body of the text. It frequently contains provisions that restrict or even eliminate what is allowed for in the rest of the document.

2. He is saying that we should not sit around passively and allow a "disease like malaria" to ravage peoples lives, instead we should do everything we can to eradicate malaria and all other such diseases.
Thank you guys!
