One of the men shook his head and said, “I am this close to calling the police. You are trespassing and obstructing progress on a contracted job.

I guess this close to doing sth is similar to "going to do sth". is it an informal use? I've never seen this expression before.

Hi,

One of the men shook his head and said, “I am this close to calling the police. You are trespassing and obstructing progress on a contracted job.

I guess this close to doing sth is similar to "going to do sth". is it an informal use? I've never seen this expression before.

It means 'very close to doing something'. It is often accompanied by the speaker holding up two fingers close together, to illustrate 'a small distance'.
