I am an insurance investigator being accused of making slandering remarks about our insureds. My company has asked that I write an apology letter without admitting to guilt. I need help. This is what I have come up with so far.
The purpose of this letter is to convey to you my sincere apologies for any misunderstandings or perceptions in which you feel that I made slandering comments about your family. It is and was my intention to act in a professional manner when conducting my investigations.
Here is a restatement of your words that admits to nothing specific (i.e. slandering).

The purpose of this letter is to thank you for your business and to offer my sincere apologies for any misunderstandings or perceived negativity in my previous communications with you.

My personal integrity and working in a professional manner are very important to me when conducting investigations. I appreciate your business, and am sorry for any past remarks that might have offended you. It was certainly not intentional on my part.
If you think this matter is serious enough to end up in court, another approach would be to talk to a lawyer before you do anything further.

Best wishes, Clive

Excellent suggestion!!!
If you are working for an insurance company why aren't they using their legal staff to deal with this?
because if I am deposed they want the letter to have been written by me and not an attorney.

Consider this.

Your company will tell you what is best for the company.

Your lawyer will tell you what is best for you.

great suggestion!!!
You should really go talk to a certain lawyer before doing anything else.
