I have twice, now, spent some time writing and error checking an answer, only to find when I have posted it that another answer has been selected whilst I was typing.

Should there not be a delay between a question being asked and an answer selected?

My only concern is that EFL students should be given as much additional advice as possible, and the administrators as much choice as possible, before the question is marked as answered.

I see Patricks point because sometimes I do see a better answer that comes along later. I've done this myself. I see a good answer and click 'best answer'. Then later, when I come back to the thread, I see another answer that puts a new twist on the topic or is more clear that the answer that I selected.
Hi,

I think you both have a point, but more than one reply can be selected as "best answer", and this happens especially when, as Cwtch puts it, "another answer ...puts a new twist on the topic or is more clear". There's enough room for lots of good answers! Emotion: smile

[Y] Well done. Please do keep this up. Emotion: smile

That is reasonable, and I agree with Tanit: this is why you can choose more than one best asnwer. Emotion: wink
The problem is that once an answer is selected as 'best answer', no other answer can be suggested as best, and the topic no longer shows up in 'unanswered questions'.

I would suggest a 24 hour delay from first posting of the question before a 'best answer' is selected, and a further 30 minutes before that selection is made final.

I think it is OK to show up as best answer immediately but give people 24 hours to chamge their choice for the case a better answer comes along. Also, I agree that it should be 24 hours before it is considered answered.

Patrick,

You can choose more that one best answer. For example, have a look at this thread .
"Final" selections wouldn't be good, in my opinion, because sometimes threads fade but in a while they may stir again and some new answers may come forth. The same goes for any time delay: sometimes the best answer is given right away, and sometimes a thread doesn't get any even in more than 24 hours... It all depends.

Cwtch,

If it anyhow happens that a better answer comes, and a chosen one becomes inefficacious, a mod can always un-verify it. Or - again - several answers may be shown as the best ones.
Thank you for the clarification.

A supplementary question:

Would it be 'bad form, old boy' for someone to suggest their own answer as best?
