1. What is the outer layer of a (squared) bread called?

2. While we're on it, what are the different kinds of bread? I've heard of toast, bun, and pastry, but I'm not sure how they differ.

Thanks for the help. Emotion: smile

1. The crust.

2. Lots of types of bread.

Toast is not a type of bread, it is any bread that has been 'toasted' (cooked in a toaster or under a grill).

Bun - this is usually a small round sweet tasting bread.

Pastry is not bread. It's the stuff you find holding in the filling of a pie.

Bun - this is usually a small round sweet tasting bread. In AE, the hamburger and hotdog buns are not particularly sweet.

Pastry is not bread. It's the stuff you find holding in the filling of a pie. We also consider eclairs, doughnuts, cream-filled things, little fruit tarts, etc., to be pastr(ies).
Again, interesting cultural differences. Emotion: wink

All right. Do you happen to know another type of bread that starts with "b"? I can't remember what it's called, but it's at the tip of my tongue.

Also, when do we say just "bread"?

What do you mean "when do we say just 'bread'"? Bread is bread - it is the basic.

You can ask also for baguettes (small French loaves), bagels (Jewish rolls with holes in the centre), brioche (a French bread, rather sweet and light), These are all forms of bread.

There is also wholemeal bread, sourdough bread, white bread, wheatmeal bread, rye bread, and so on.
A bap is a small soft bread roll.
Students: Are you brave enough to let our tutors analyse your pronunciation?
Apparently, I was thinking of "bread roll." xD
There are also bread "sticks", popular with spaghetti and lasagne.
