Hi

Could you please tell me the meaning of "broad" in this sentence? Am I right in understanding that "wide" cannot be used here?

They all were in broad agreement on the matter.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom

If there is 'broad agreement' on a matter, that means that people have agreed in a general sort of way. There may well still be a variety of details on which those same people do not yet agree.

The word 'wide' does not convey the same idea.

"BROAD" in this sentence means; general, not deatailed
e.g=The negotiators reached a broad aggreement on (about) the main issues.
But it refers to the meaning of" large in extent from side to side" you are right.
