Hi,

Which one is the correct choice in the following instance?

"... but it is forgotten that he was also the first to reach the south Pole by/with motor vehicle and to jet-boat up the Ganges."
The answer key says "by", but I wonder if either of them is correct.

Iman

With no article or adjective, it can only be 'by'. These are OK:

he was also the first to reach the South Pole by motor vehicle
he was also the first to reach the South Pole with/in/on a motor vehicle

Hi Mistre Micawbre,

Thanks a lot. How about the following one which is extracted from the same text:

"Although he laughs at the notion, Sir Edmund has arguably become the most influential figure in the region around Mount Everest, which he scaled with Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay in 1953."

Regards,

Iman
It is either miswritten or mispunctuated. These are OK:

which he scaled with Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay in 1953
which he scaled with his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, in 1953
