Cadfael is set in the reign of King Stephen of England.

Henry I's daughter, Matilda, was usurped by Stephen I in 1135, there was civil unrest, Stephen was briefly imprisoned in 1141 when Matilda seized power and Stephen was forced to give up the throne in 1151 to Matilda's heir, Henry II.

BTW, Stephen didn't give up the throne; he named Henry his heir in 1153, after Stephen's son died.. Stephen kept the throne until he died, the next year. The sitation cannot be described in a couple of sentences!.

One of Stephens surviving sons (Eustace) died, the other (William) inherited his fathers other titles as Count of Mortain and Boulogne, and Earl of Surrey.
