TASK 1.The graph below shows the number of enquiries received by the Tourist Information Office in one city over a six-month period in 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

This line graph demonstrates the number of enquiries that the Tourist Information Office received in 3 different ways in one city in the first 6 months of 2011.

Overall, it is clear that the requirements in person surpassed those that sent letter/email and by telephone. On the contrary, enquiries sent by telephone witnessed a dramatic decline in the last period.

Turning to details, personal requirements increased significantly from January and climbed to the highest number of approximately 1900 in June. The number of letters fluctuated in the first 4 months between 800 and 1000 before reaching a peak at 1600 letters in the last month of the period. However, while the other two were rising, enquiries received by call witnessed a strong decline. In the first 2 months, it remained unchanged at 750 calls, and then fell steadily in May and stayed at 400 in the last months. Strikingly, requirements in person and by letter met each other in the middle of March, occupied 1000 enquiries.

TASK 2. Individuals can do nothing to improve the environment; only governments and large companies can make a difference.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In today's world, it is a common belief that only authorities and big organizations and businesses have to take responsibility for preserving and nurturing the environment and individuals don't have to pay attention to their habitat. I partly disagree with this view for the following reasons.

On the one hand, the waste from large-scale industries harmfully destroys the clean water source from underground and seas, and a huge amount of industrial waste is discharged into ocean and soil on an annual basis and it is pointed out that the amount of trash is unstoppable. In addition, governments and giant companies can invest a huge amount of money in building environmentally friendly systems and products to prevent soil erosion and air pollution. For instance, using biodegradable plastic bags is likely to be common in developed countries with a huge consumption of single-use plastics.

On the other hand, I believe that protecting the environment from pollution and global warming is the duty of everyone. Only governments cannot deal with such a global problem like the depletion of ozone layer or greenhouse gas emission, they need supporters to help them tackle this issue. Furthermore, humans are the biggest cause that leads to man-made disasters, which are detrimental to the Earth, so they have to be responsible with what they have done to nature. To illustrate, clearcutting is the consequence of the lack of accommodation and infrastructure in developed countries.

In conclusion, for the reasons I have mentioned above, I believe that both individuals and authorities need to put their hand in protecting and improving the quality of the environment.
