Topic: As countries develop, their populations tend to live individually or in small family units. What are the causes of this trend and what are the effects on individuals and society?

The development of countries lead to a trend that their citizens have a tendency to live alone or in small family units. I will examine the reasons behind this phenomenon and adverse effects that it brings to individuals and society.

There are various factors responsible for the trend of living independently and having small family units, two of which are changes in thinking and higher living costs. Concerning thinking of today’s people, when a country develops, people tend to form a mindset that emphasizes the importance of freedom. Therefore, those people would decide to live alone, which allows them to be free to do what they want without worrying about others’opinions. For example, individuals living alone can get up late since they do not have to face scolding given by their parents. Coupled with this is that because of economic growth, costs of living are increasing. As a result, people would opt for smaller families with fewer or even no children so that they may be able to cut the expenses.

This development can bring about several detrimental implications to not only individuals but also society. Regarding individuals, since people living alone may not have no one to have a talk to when they stay at home, they would experience a sense of loneliness and isolation. This will negatively impacts their mental well-being. Looking at influences on society, small family units can contribute to declining birth rates as well as aging populations. Consequently, there would be an insufficient workforce to supply to the labour market.

In conclusion, the priority of freedom over having family beside and the ever-increasing costs of living would result in the people’s tendency to live independently or in small families. Additionally, this phenomenon can negatively influence both individuals and society.
