Hey, Derek, I'm Jewish (in case you hadn't noticed). To ... I'm not a Christian, I still consider myself an American.

Handel's "Messiah" is soapy?

Oh we kept the shout going until Candlemass. The last ... of good Advent hymns to keep us going in Advent!

A friend who is an Anglican parish priest says "I HATE carol services! They're bogus and sentimental." He has a point, though the music, /pace/ Bob, can be very good.

Richard Dawkins, otoh, is said to quite like them. I sang in our University carol service yesterday. The God Squad not only tried to import religion but also confront the cosy assumptions of the congregation by putting on little playlets. This caused a certain amount of muttering among the assembled, that and being made to get up and go outside in the rain for the start of the service.
As the event had been put together by students, none of the running order was in accord with the service sheet; so the audience were up and down like a ***'s drawers (Not the Nine O'Clock News circa 1978 inter alia). The choir had all of half an hour to rehearse three solo pieces, and several carols, but we did fine. I liked 'Silent Night' because the basses got a chance to be heard. (Since our choir director was in a bit of a strop because of the disorganisation, two of the verses of Silent Night were sung fortissimo.)
Sheila Hancock gave a very good reading, tho'. She's our chancellor, very active and a great asset to us.

"like a ***'s drawers on boat race night" is the way I know it.

Not in England, it hsan't. The retailers are so panicked that they have reduced prices to an unheard-of extent. The crowds are apparently up about 30% on last year (according to the press - I certainly haven't ventured out to see for myself).

Reading some blog or other recently, I noted a complaint from a pagan that his ancestors' festival of song, dance, decorated trees, and wassail had been taken over by the Christians, who had the nerve to add a superfluous religious component. Seems like a good point. If the Christians want a religious celebration at the same time as, say, the Saturnalia, more power to them, but let's not let them guilt the rest of us out of our fun.
I'm not sure I fully agree with the pagan gentleman, but there's a good point buried in there somewhere.
In the spirit of the season, I wish y'all a joyous celebration of whatever you celebrate. In deference to Purl Gurl's concerns, feel free not to exchange your assholes this year. (And would someone perhaps let her in on the joke, which seems once again to be on her.)
